ROCKLAND- When the cinematic masterpiece, Barbie hit theaters this past July, it quickly became a fan favorite and stole hearts with it’s satirical take on the female experience.
Barbie hit theaters July 21, a little more than a week later, it became Warner Bro’s highest-grossing film in its 100-year history, making more than one billion dollars making it’s director, Greta Gerwig the only woman director to achieve this on her own.
Greta Gerwig who also directed/filmed Little Women, Lady Bird, and Frances Ha; is appreciated for her flawless balance between feminism and satire.
Senior Meghan Hailer explained, “I know Greta Gerwig[‘s movies] very well, I love her movies so, I was expecting something great,” and “I think [feminism] was portrayed wonderfully and it got the point across without exaggerating the other side, it was very pro-women.”
English teacher, Mr. Chad Bigsby agrees. He said, “It gave me a better understanding of what is would be like to be a woman in today’s society.”
The film also starred actor Ryan Gosling as Ken, and Margot Robbie as Barbie. Who’s eccentric personalities were felt through the screen; stealing viewers’ hearts.
Especially Ryan Gosling, who stole Mr. Bigsby’s heart, “There wasn’t enough Gosling, I’m a Gossie.”
Junior Josh Campoverde added that he expected the movie to be great but, “not really much thought or meaning.”
Hailer would disagree as she expected it to be, “more than just a toy movie.”
Mr. Bigsby has no expectations. However, he would prefer his job to be beach.
Most would agree that Barbie highlights the experiences of growing up as a woman. With a light touch of satirical feminism, the movie seemed easy to digest and shed light on a new perspective.
“What really stood out to me was the scene when they came to the real world and he [Ken] was so happy to be admired but she [Barbie] said there was a real undercurrent of aggression and it clicked for me, must be a hard way to live,” Mr. Bigsby shared.
Mr. Bigsby also believes the movie is an essential watch because it gives viewers a new perspective on today’s society.
