What We Are Learning

Math

This week, we will conclude our learning about equivalent fractions and begin learning about converting mixed numbers and improper fractions, as well as converting improper fractions to mixed numbers. The students will use visuals and then focus on the values themselves. We will also begin comparing numbers with like and unlike denominators. The students will have a quiz next week, likely on Wednesday or Thursday, depending on the progress we make this week.

Optional (and encouraged!) Resources: Reflex Math, IXL and Prodigy.

Reading

Reading improves with reading, so please have your child read at least 20 minutes per night! Please encourage this to become a part of their daily routine. If your child decides to bring home the book from their reading group, feel free to ask them questions about the reading. We have comprehension tests every Friday.

Next week, reading group book tests will be Thursday, March 21.

Spelling

Students are to complete 1 word study activity at home each week. They should also complete a pretest before Friday to prepare for the test. I will provide opportunities during the week for additional practice.

Next week, new spelling tests will be Thursday, March 21.

As a reminder, students will receive a 75% for word study homework if they do not show an activity and pretest on Friday. They will receive a 50% if I receive nothing.

Social Studies

This week, we will begin learning about Western Migration! We will discuss the reasons for migrating, the result of this movement, and how it changed the lives of the settlers. If time permits, we will also begin learning about the Civil War in Virginia by comparing the North and the South, then discussing the events leading up to the war.

Science

We will focus on Social Studies for the next few weeks.
