4th Grade News!
Check out What's Coming Up This Week!
This week we will begin new guided reading books! Students will continue to work with Mrs. Thomas, Mrs. Fox, and myself on a daily basis. The comprehension strategy we will be focusing on this week is making Inferences. Please remember to have your child read 20 minutes each night!
The week we will conclude our unit on Addition and Subtraction. The unit test will be on Tuesday, October 23rd and will cover whole number and decimal number addition and subtraction as well as estimation and multi-step word problems. Students will have ample time for review in class on Monday as well as complete a study guide for classwork/homework. Following the Addition and Subtraction Unit Test, we will begin our next unit on Graphing!
Students will receive new spelling words this week! Homework #1 from the choice board is due on Thursday, October 25th. The Word Study test will be on Tuesday, October 30th.
This week we will be focusing on Social Studies.
This week we will continue our unit on Jamestown! On Monday and Tuesday, students will be using the App "Book Creator" to make their own digital book explaining the Early Years of Jamestown. In addition, we will learn how the settlers interacted and got along with the Powhatan Indians.
This week we will begin a new narrative piece of writing called "How to Catch A Monster." This Halloween themed writing project will focus on using sequence words to show the order of events in a narrative.

In Other News...
Parent-Teacher Conferences will be on Monday, November 5th. If you would like to schedule a conference, please copy and paste the link to the sign up genius into your web browser and choose an available slot. I look forward to meeting with you!
No School For Students!
There is no school on Friday, October 26th.
4th Grade will be celebrating Pumpkin Day on Wednesday, October 31st. Please have your child bring in a small pie baking pumpkin on or before Wednesday, October 31st. We will be needing multiple pumpkins for our activities!
Other items needed:
- Mini Marshmellows
- Assorted Candy

Our 4th Grade trip to Jamestown will be on Friday, November 16th! Permission forms will be going home with students on Monday, October 1st. This is an extended day trip with a cost of $28.00 per student. Please read the permission form carefully and return it no later than Wednesday, October 31st. If you are interested in chaperoning, please indicate so on the permission form, sign and return the chaperone guidelines page, and include an additional $28.00 for your seat on the bus and entrance ticket.
Harvest Fest is Thursday, October 25. The theme for the 4th Grade Harvest Fest basket is board games! So far we have Connect 4, Chow Crown, Apples to Apples and Don’t Lose Your Cool. We still need a few more items in order to fill the basket! If you are able to donate a board game, please send it in with your child as soon as possible. Suggested board games are Jenga, Googly Eyes, Zingo, Monopoly Jr., Battleship, etc.
Storybook Character Day!
Please join the SCA as we celebrate books and reading with Storybook Character Day on Wednesday, October 31st. Students are asked to dress like their favorite book character. No masks or weapons are allowed.
Bullying Prevention Day!
RCPS is Together Against Bullying!!! Wear ORANGE on October 24, 2018 for Bullying Prevention and Awareness! Come together in one giant ORANGE message of hope and support. Wear ORANGE to color our community! Visibly show that our schools and communities believe that no student should ever experience bullying! Everyone should be treated with dignity and respect!!!
