Poetry Out Loud 2020-2021

The Virginia Commission for the Arts (VCA) in partnership with the National Endowment for the Arts and the National Poetry Foundation is pleased to coordinate Poetry Out Loud 2020-2021. The RCHS competition will take place in November with winners advancing to the regional competition. Several regional competitions and one state final will take place in 2021. Info and Registration

Each student interested in competing will select a poem from the Poetry Out Loud Anthology to memorize and recite. Students will present their poem during a live virtual event held November 23 and 24. Performances will be judged on accuracy and delivery. The winners of the local competition will be announced on December 4, 2020. Registration is open from October 16 to November 20. REGISTER HERE

2020 State Champion

Katherine Nguyen, a sophomore at Colonial Forge High School in Stafford, successfully defended her title as State Champion for Virginia’s Poetry Out Loud competition, during the state’s first digital competition held March 18, 2020. Earning the title for the second year in a row. Miss Nguyen competed along with nine other students from across the Commonwealth in a Facebook Live event hosted by VRM, Virginia’s Home for Public Media.


Awards

Each winner at the state level receives a $200 and an all-expenses paid trip with an adult chaperone to Washington to compete for the national championship. The state winner’s school receives a $500 stipend for the purchase of poetry books. The first runner-up receives $100 with $200 for his/her school library.
