$5,000 Teaching Tolerance Grant Awarded to Stevenson Teacher to fund Tusitala Publication

English Teacher, Matthew Tom has a passion for teaching. Mr. Tom recognizes that our students are not empty vessels. They come with a lot of experience and insight to share. He worked collaboratively with fellow teachers, Matthew Johnson and Dr. Rachel Bray, as well as student editors to showcase the outstanding student work that most people do not see outside the classrooms. This grant enabled all Stevenson students to receive a free professionally printed and bound copy of Tusitala. Thank you Mr. Tom for all your teacher leadership and hard work!

Per Mr. Tom, "The desired outcome of Tusitala is to help students take ownership of their own learning and to take pride in themselves as published scholars, artists, and writers. When students feel their voices—no matter the language—carry meaning, and when they feel that people are listening, self-efficacy and campus morale will increase and students will become more resilient, empathetic, and caring individuals.

Within their minds, hearts, and their own lived experiences, students intuitively have characters to bring to life, worlds to create, and adventures to be shared. It is through expressing and experimenting with their thoughts and ideas that middle school students build empathy, garner the courage to push through adversity and against the status quo, and listen to stories that make them feel a little less alone."

Farmer's Insurance:

Thank America's Teachers Results

Congratulations to Trish Morgan!

Thank you to all of you who voted and encouraged others to vote! We could not have done it without you! The students of Robert Louis Stevenson Middle School would not have benefited from this is it were not for the collective effort of the students, faculty, community, and state! We are so excited for what tomorrow will bring! RLSMS' students will benefit for years to come based on the experiences they will take away from this space dedicated to the expansion and development of collaboration, curiosity, creativity, and critical thinking.
