Ms. Nguyen's Kindergarten News

May 23, 2020

I cannot believe it, but we have made it to the finish line! A big thank you to each of you for all of the dedication you have put towards being the "teacher" for your child for the past two months! The year did not end the way we had planned, but it sure did end successfully.

Please do not forget that our drive by celebration will take place this Friday, May 29th, from 12:00-1:00 PM. We are going to end the year with an unforgettable celebration! On Friday, you will drive by the school just like you would for pick up/drop off (please make sure you stay in line). As you pull up, someone will be there to greet you to take your child's name. As you pull to the front of the line, we will greet you with your child's belongings. Please remember that everyone needs to stay in their cars, as we will bring everything to you (if you ordered a yearbook, it will be in your child's bag).

I do not think that our class books will arrive before Friday. With that being said, once they come in, I will figure out the logistics of getting them to everyone.

I also wanted to share that I will be releasing a special surprise via Class Dojo on Friday. It is something that I have been working on for the past month and I am excited to share it with everyone! <3

As always, if you have any questions, please feel free to contact me.

May 18-22, 2020

I cannot believe I am saying this, but we are almost at the finish line for the year!

Pictured above are some of the highlights of our week last week! We had our second to last Zoom session, got to create the coolest playground for bugs, and received our class friendship bracelets! There is some meaning behind the colors used for the bracelets... the blue and white symbolize our school and the green symbolizes the pod we spent 80-90% of the day in. It is my hope that when we look at the bracelets, we are reminded of the amazing kindergarten year we have had. <3

This week, your child will be using his or her knowledge of addition and subtraction equations (up to 5) to create a math game. Students will review math facts through constructing their own games! I cannot wait to see what the kids come up with!

**In the assignment calendar for May, it states that your child MUST check in with me at least one time each week to let me know how things are going. If your child has not turned in any assignments, you will be getting a note on Monday stating which assignment(s) I need by this Friday, May 22nd. If I have no evidence of work from your child, I cannot give your child a grade for Quarter 4. Your child will receive a "Below" on his or her report.**

Please make sure that you are logging on to Raz-Kids at least once a week. When doing the running records, please try not to prompt the children as they read, as I want to gauge how your child is doing. Please note that at this point in the year your child should be able to read by him or herself. If your child is struggling sounding out words and recoding them accurately, please continue to practice the skill.

Our FINAL Zoom session will be this Tuesday, May 19th at 7:00 PM. This is the final time we will virtually "get together" as a class. To enter the session on Tuesday, click on the following link:

My office hours are 1PM-3PM Monday-Thursday. At this time, I will be able to "hangout" with your child and answer any questions you may have about assignments.

A few reminders..

  • This Thursday, May 21st, will be the last day of my office hours. After Thursday, my method of communication will solely be through Class Dojo and e-mail.
  • SAVE THE DATE: May 29th, 2020- Kindergarten Promotion Celebration
  • Please make sure that your child is reading to you every night for at least 15 minutes. At this point, your child is ready to begin sounding words out and reading to you.
  • At this point in the year your child should be able to read to you. Your child should be sounding words out and recoding them properly. At this point in the year we are focusing on the accuracy of what is being read.
  • Please also make sure that you are going over sight words with your child each night. Each week, we focus on two sight words, but it is important that you are going over the sight words at home as well. Sight words are VERY important to learn because they help us read, as a lot of them do not make sense phonetically.

As always, if you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact me.

May 11-15, 2020

I loved seeing all of the kids' presentations last week! They were each so unique and I could tell that the kids were excited about what they had done. This week, I encourage your child to look at each of his or her classmates' presentations on our Flipgrid and comment on at least one friend's presentation. When we present in class, we normally end each presentation with questions or comments, and I would love to see them continue to do so virtually. All your child would have to do is click on the link and click on the "responses" to watch. To comment on a video, your child would just need to click on the friend's video and click "Add a Reply," where he or she will be able to record a video response back to the friend. Click on the link below to access the Flipgrid:

**If your child has not posted or e-mailed me his or her presentation, please make sure that he or she does so as soon as possible. These presentations are graded and if I do not see it, I cannot grade it.**

I am excited to announce that we are in the midst of planning something special for Kindergarten promotion! Please SAVE THE DATE: Friday, May 29, 2020 (12-1 PM)! More details are to come, but please save that date. I will need every child's t-shirt size, so please help me out by filling out this form by this Tuesday, May 12th:

This week, your child will be creating a playground for bugs using their knowledge of 2D and 3D shapes! Your child will need: construction paper (or any kind of paper), a pencil, scissors, and glue or tape. Your child will write a piece about his or her playground after construction is finished. I know the kids LOVE creating things, so I cannot wait to see what your child creates!

In the assignment calendar for May, it states that your child MUST check in with me at least one time each week to let me know how things are going.

I loved "traveling" with your children this past week! See the picture above to see some adventures we went on! I got to go on a piggy back ride, meet a new baby brother, watch a sink or float experiment, and more!

Our next Zoom session will be this Tuesday, May 12th at 7:00 PM. This week, I want to start off by doing a letter show and tell! Your child will need to bring an item to share that starts with the same letter as his or her first name. For example, my name is Amanda, so I need to bring in an item that starts with the letter "A." To enter the session on Tuesday, click on the following link:

May 4-8, 2020

HIP HIP HOORAY, we have accomplished so much within these past three weeks of learning and it is time for use to present our Passion Projects! Your child has a couple of options when it comes to presenting his or her project. Here are the options:

    1. Post/record a video of your child presenting his or her project to Flipgrid (click on the link below to access)
    2. Record a video of your child presenting his or her project and send it to Ms. Nguyen's e-mail

Please remember that the purpose of this presentation is for the kids to present what they have learned about their topics. In order to ensure maximum points are earned, please refer to the project rubric.

The presentation deadline is this Friday, May 8th, at 6:00 PM. If you feel that your child cannot make this deadline, please let me know so that we can make other arrangements.

Assignments for phase 3 of at home learning were put in the mail yesterday. If you do not get them by Monday, do not panic, as Dr. Compton will link the drive to access the assignments in tomorrow night's newsletter.

For the next three weeks, students will be working on completing three math projects. This week, your child will be surveying family members to see where they want to go for Summer vacation. They will be creating a data table and analyzing their data to create a bar graph. From there, students will use their data analysis skills to determine where their family wants to go for summer vacation. In the assignment calendar for May, it states that your child MUST check in with me at least one time each week to let me know how things are going.

Please make sure that you are logging on to Raz-Kids at least once a week. This past week, I assigned each child a book to read and a running record assignment, where your child was given a passage to read and record, followed by comprehension questions. When doing the running records, please try not to prompt the children as they read, as I want to gauge how your child is doing. Please note that at this point in the year your child should be able to read by him or herself. If your child is struggling sounding out words and recoding them accurately, please continue to practice the skill. I will post a video on Dojo later on in the week of different strategies we have used in the classroom to help guide you.

  • Please make sure that your child is reading to you every night for at least 15 minutes. At this point, your child is ready to begin sounding words out and reading to you. Please also make sure that you are filling out his or her reading log each day. The reading logs are graded.

April 27-May 1, 2020

I am over the moon about how excited the kids are with their projects. I got to talk to quite a few of them about their products and I am excited to see what they have created!

**If your child has not checked in with me via hangout, email, or flipgrid, please make sure that he or she does on Monday. As stated in the April calendar, a check-in is MANDATORY once within the first 5 days and once within the next 5 days. Last week your child should have checked in by letting me know how the project was going.**

This week, your child will be working on writing one piece. First your child is going to create another bubble map about what they have learned about their topic. Then, your child is going to decide which type of writing he or she wants to do. Your child will have 3 options (opinion writing, informative writing, or a how-to piece). While your child is working on his or her writing, please make sure that you are looking at the correct writing rubric in order to ensure that maximum points are achieved. Please keep in mind that these are the writing rubrics issued by the state, therefore if your child is struggling with one aspect of the rubric, it is a working point for your child as he or she prepares for the next school year.

**I am working on finalizing the details on how your child is going to present and "turn in" his or her project. I will let you know by next week about how the process is going to work.**

Please make sure that you are logging on to Raz-Kids at least once a week. This past week, I assigned each child a book to read and a running record assignment, where your child was given a passage to read and record, followed by comprehension questions. Our next Zoom session will be this Tuesday, April 28th, at 7:00 PM. Last week's session was an absolute blast and I have another fun activity planned for the beginning of our session on Tuesday (hint- scavenger hunt)! To enter the session on Tuesday, click on the following link:

April 20-24, 2020

I LOVED hearing/seeing what your child was going to do his or her passion project last week! I got to talk to quite a few of the kids and they seemed very excited about their topics, which made me even more excited. Please remember that this is your child's project, therefore there is no right or wrong way to go about learning about his or her topic.

**If your child has not checked in with me via hangout, email, or flipgrid, please make sure that he or she does on Monday. As stated in the April calendar, a check-in is MANDATORY within the first 5 days. All your child needs to do is tell me what his or her project topic is and anything that he or she has learned so far.**

Next week, your child will be working on the next phase of his or her project, which will be creating. I cannot wait to see what the kids come up with!

I am excited to announce that we will now be using "Raz-Kids!" For those who may not know, this is a leveled reading program that will provide your child with books to read on his or her level. Each week, I will assign your child a book and an assignment to complete (independent reading time would be great for this). I will send out directions and log in information later on today.

April 13-17, 2020

I hope everyone had a wonderful Spring Break! It literally flew by for me, and I am SO excited to see what the kids come up with for their Passion Projects!

Passion Projects are student-driven, process-centered opportunities for students to explore their own interests. Students will identify a challenge, problem, or question they would like to explore. Over the next three weeks, students will plan, manage, and reflect upon their learning, with a focus on the process of inquiry. This process allows students the freedom to think independently, take risks, and learn from their attempts.

If you have not done so yet, please make sure that you send me a picture of the following items (work from before Spring Break):

    • Packet cover sheet with your initials
    • One evidence of a writing assignment
    • One evidence of a math assignment

** I have only received work from 4 students. Please remember that this work is graded and MUST be turned in via Dojo or email by TOMORROW, April 12th.**

Do not forget to send Ms. Nguyen your child's illustration and writing for our class book. Please make sure that your child's work is put in the mail (in the addressed and stamped envelope that was sent to you) by this Wednesday, April 15th, so that we can ensure that we make the publishing deadline.

Please make sure that you send back the following: 1-illustration, 2-writing, 3-order form, and 4-envelope. If you are planning on ordering a book, please send the payment in the envelope. Please keep in mind the if you need to send the form back even if you would not like to purchase a book (mark the gray box at the bottom stating "No,I am not interested...").

As I shared yesterday, we will be having a "class catch up" on Zoom Monday night at 7:00 PM. Just click the link below to join on Monday:

March 30-April 3, 2020

Another week down and a couple more to go... Good news though; Spring Break is almost upon us! I hope everyone is safe and well. I LOVED video-chatting with some of the kiddos this past week! Ms. Crimm was even able to pop into one! I am hoping that more kids will be able to pop into my "hangout!"

On Monday, we are going to try something new. With this being said, you will have to download the "Zoom" application beforehand. I believe on the App Store it is called "ZOOM Cloud Meetings." I have scheduled a "circle time" meeting for us at 1:00 PM this Monday, March 30th. The beauty of this is that we will all get to see each other at one time (can you say BEST DAY EVER?!). Just click on the link below at 1:00PM to join:

Your child will be finishing up his/her "At Home Learning" packet this week. Once completed, please spend the rest of the days catching up with sight words, addition/subtraction, free writing, and independent reading. Please remember that the kids still need to be reading for at least 15 minutes each day (reading to the parent). Since we cannot have guided reading daily, it is very important that you are working on reading with your child. If you need any tips or tricks, please do not hesitate to reach out to me.

I am so excited to share that "at home learning" will look very different from the past couple of weeks! As a team, we have been working very hard on creating a meaningful and exciting experience for the kids. I will share more information about it all soon! (:

Please know that if you need to reach out to me, I am available via Dojo, or now via Google Hangouts ( https://www.google.com/url?q=http://meet.google.com/thg-czfk-obc&sa=D&ust=1584796770949000&usg=AFQjCNFtm7mfbrWAyQjZ4djMV0vX1_aAWw ). March 23-27, 2020

This past week has been a crazy one! I have been going crazy trying to think of things for the kids to do so that they can stay engaged in learning while at home. I have signed us up for an EPIC account, which will be free through June. I am really excited about this website because your child will have access to TONS of books that I know they will love! I will send out instructions on how to connect on EPIC via e-mail.

I understand that the work for the week can be overwhelming. Please do not try to blow through all of the work at one time. We do not do that in the classroom, so I would not suggest doing so at home either. We often take brain breaks between each subject (playing Simon says or GoNoodle). If you sense that your child is getting frustrated, take a five minute break and do something that your child wants to do and then come back to the work.

I miss all of my babies so much and I hope that everyone is well and is staying safe. My office hours are 1PM-3PM Monday-Friday. At this time, I will be able to "hangout" with your child and answer any questions you may have about assignments. If your child has not phoned in, I would LOVE to see him or her next week! (:

March 17-20, 2020

Our newsletter for the week can be found in the "Weekly Newsletters" tab at the top of the page.

Last week, we learned about our last two biomes (desert and rainforest). One thing that stuck out to me during each of our discussions was that the students were noticing the differences between the environment, including both plants and animals. We are very excited for what is to come in our learning!

This week, we will take a deeper look in to our biome of choice and have a deeper discussion about what animals and plants need to survive. What are the similarities? What are the differences? Does the environment change any of these factors?

Yesterday, we read, "The Night Before St. Patrick's Day," and were given the challenge of working together to create the best trap for a leprechaun. Before breaking off in to our teams, we discussed what leprechauns like and what the goal of the challenge was. As I walked around, I was impressed by the ideas that the kids came up with. They were being very analytical and my mind was blown!... I wonder if any of the traps will catch a leprechaun on Tuesday!

Our newsletter for the week can be found in the "Weekly Newsletters" tab at the top of the page.

Last Monday, we began our dive in to our new unit of inquiry by looking at sensory bottles of different biomes. As we looked at each bottle, we drew a picture of one thing that we saw. We noticed that there were lots of different animals and objects in each bottle. As the week progressed, we took a deeper look into each of the biomes (Arctic, Grasslands, Ocean) and noted some key things that we saw in each of them. This week, we will learn about our final two biomes (Desert and Rainforest). We will also dive into a discussion about what plants and animals need to survive.

Yesterday, we wrapped up Read Across America Week by reading "Bartholomew and the Oobleck" by Dr. Seuss. After reading the book, we discussed what the problem of the story was and came to the consensus that the oobleck was creating lots of problems for everyone in the kingdom. We talked about how the liquid was described (ooey and gooey) and how people and animals were getting stuck because so much of it was falling through the air. After our discussion, we worked together to make our very own oobleck! We noticed that when we left the oobleck alone, it got hard, but when we started playing with it, it got soft. Our minds were BLOWN! Check out our class story on Dojo to see us in action!

March 2-6, 2020

Our newsletter for the week can be found in the "Weekly Newsletters" tab at the top of the page.

We had such a productive week last week! We took a deeper dive in to learning about past and present. We looked through photos of household items from the past and compared them to household items from the present. While we were looking at these photos, quite a few of the kids were sharing that their grandma had such and such, and they even shared what it was used for! WHAT?!?!

We ended the week by presenting our interview projects. The kids did SO well! After each child presented, we shared what we liked about each project and presented questions to the presenter. My teacher heart EXPLODED listening to the kids give positive feedback to each other and asking clarifying questions!

This week, we will be diving in to our new unit of inquiry! On Monday, we will begin our dive in to answering our new driving question... "What do we, as endangered animals, need to keep our species alive?"

February 24-28, 2020

Our newsletter for the week can be found in the "Weekly Newsletters" tab at the top of the page.

Last week flew by so quickly! We learned about how author's use alliteration and onomatopoeia to engage readers. We read lots of exciting books and were able to identify when the authors were using such devices. WAY TO GO!

Thank you for sending in baby pictures (they were sent back home in your child's take home folder yesterday)! Instead of doing a STEM challenge yesterday, we had an AWESOME discussion about how we have changed since we were babies. We discussed what was displayed on the board and how we knew it was us as babies. We also talked about what we used to do when we were that little and things that we do now. We noted that the way we communicated was very different from how it used to be. We introduced the terms“past” and “present” and discussed the difference. We learned that the past is what happened a long time ago and the present is what is happening now. We played Guess Who with the baby pictures and it was really interesting to hear the kids' predictions and why they thought it was "x" student. I was honestly impressed by the amount of correct guesses we got (they were looking at facial features... WHAT?!?!).

We will be wrapping up this mini unit this week and I cannot wait to see what the kids have done with their interview projects!

    • The students will be working on a take-home project that they will need your assistance with. Your child will be required to interview an older relative or family friend (older as in someone who has much different life experiences than your child). Below are 3 questions we want them to ask:

1. What was school like for you?

2. How did you get from place to place?

3. What did you do for fun?

    • The purpose of this project is to show them how much everyday life changes over time. This will give them an authentic experience and allow them to make connections to their lives now and to their peers.
    • You may answer these questions on regular paper, a poster, whatever you see fit. We are also asking that your child draws pictures to accompany the answers. This gives us a better representation of what they learned and will also help them when they present their findings to their peers.
    • This project is due THIS Thursday, February 27th.
    • We will present them that Thursday and Friday. If you have any questions about this, please do not hesitate to reach out to your child’s teacher. This is an individual project that all classes will be doing.

A few reminders...

  • Interview Projects are due THIS Thursday, February 27th.
  • Classroom Needs... We need your help! We are currently in need of the following to make it through the rest of the year:
  • Scholastic fliers will be sent home on Monday, February 24th, in your child's take home folder. If you would like to order any books, please make sure that your order is submitted by 6:00 PM on Friday, February 28th.
  • Please make sure that your child is reading to you every night for at least 15 minutes. At this point, your child is ready to begin sounding words out and reading to you. Please also make sure that you are filling out his or her reading log and returning it each day. The reading logs are graded.
  • Please remember that if your child is sick, he or she must be fever free or throw up free for 24 hours (without medication) to return to school, per school policy.

If your child's work has an "M" at the top, your child is mastering the skill. Last week was SO exciting! Thank you for helping your child make his or her mailbox dreams come to life! All of the mailboxes were BEAUTIFUL and I loved hearing about what mommy/daddy did and what "I" did. We had an absolute blast celebrating the holiday last Wednesday!

Last week, we began a new mini unit of inquiry. For this unit, we will examine how people/places change and/or remain the same over time. We started last week by charting how we felt at the end of the day (we will be analyzing out results this week to see if our feelings changed or stayed the same throughout the week).

This week, we are asking that you send in a baby picture of your child by Friday, February 21st (please put name on the back). We will display all of the pictures and see if we can guess who is who. We will also have a discussion about how we have changed throughout the years.

On Tuesday, February 18th, a take home project letter will be sent home in your child's blue folder. The students will be working on a take-home project that they will need your assistance with. Your child will be required to interview an older relative or family friend (older as in someone who has much different life experiences than your child). The purpose of this project is to show them how much everyday life changes over time. February 10-13, 2020

Our newsletter for the week can be found in the "Weekly Newsletters" tab at the top of the page.

We had one interesting week! We started talking about natural disasters last Wednesday... and the very next day we were dismissing early due to severe weather! I was pleasantly surprised that the kids were able to connect what we were learning to what they experienced.

Yesterday, we read, “The Biggest Snowman Ever” by Steven Kroll. After we finished the story, we had a discussion about what happened in the book. We all concluded that the two main characters tried to make the “biggest snowman ever,” but struggled doing so by themselves. We talked about the importance of teamwork in life and how sometimes we just need help from others to achieve our goals.

Before telling the children about our stem challenge, I asked the kids about the season in which snowmen can be built. We discussed different things we knew about the season and I gave the kids the challenge of making the “biggest” snowman ever, using five sheets of paper and a glue stick. The kids talked about how the paper was flat and snowmen were not. I really enjoyed listening to their conversations and LOVED how they were complimenting each other’s ideas!

Our newsletter for the week can be found in the "Weekly Newsletters" tab at the top of the page.

WE HAVE OFFICIALLY SURVIVED 100 DAYS OF KINDERGARTEN! We had SO much fun celebrating on Thursday! These next 79 days are going to FLY by!

We had a blast last week, but were missing quite a few children due to illnesses. With this being said, we have been going over how to keep the germ bugs away each day so we don't get sick. If your child is throwing up, has a fever, or diarrhea, PLEASE keep your child at home until he or she is symptom free for 24 hours without medication. We share a very tight space and the germs spread quickly, so please be mindful of this if your child is sick.

Yesterday we had a redo of our STEM challenge from last week. Before handing the materials off to the kids, we reviewed what happened last week and what we would have to do differently this week. The kids had a blast creating their skiers and testing them out on our "ski slope!" Check out our story on Dojo to see what we came up with!

January 27-31, 2020

Our newsletter for the week can be found in the "Weekly Newsletters" tab at the top of the page.

We have officially finished all of our middle of the year testing... YAY!

Last week, we learned all about the four seasons (Winter, Spring, Summer, and Fall). We learned about why the seasons change and the changes that we see not only in the environment, but also in the clothes we choose to wear. Yesterday, we reviewed what we learned about each of the seasons and took a bigger focus in to the season of winter. I asked the kids what they could do during the season of winter and they told me many things (build a snowman, play in the cold, make a snow angel, etc.). I then told the students that there is a sport that a lot of people partake in during the cold season and had them guess what it was... SKIING! I then had the students think of the process of skiing and the equipment needed in order to ski. I then gave the students the challenge of creating a person who could stand up on skis, using only aluminum foil. We were crunching for time and the students quickly became frustrated, as they were unsure about how to construct something with only one piece of foil. When time was up, I asked the students how they felt about their people and they were not happy with what they had. I told them that it was totally okay reminded them that sometimes things take more than one try to achieve. We will be redoing the challenge next friday.

Please note that we calculated the incorrect date for the 100th day last week. Our 100th day of school is actually this Thursday, January 30th; not Friday. With this being said, if you have volunteered to donate items for our celebration, please have them in by this Wednesday, January 29th.

Valentine's Day is coming up in a few weeks and I wanted to give everyone a heads up about an upcoming assignment. I will be sending home shoe boxes with your child on Monday, February 3rd, for you and your child to decorate. This will be his or her Valentine Mailbox. If you are in need of items to decorate with, please feel free to reach out to me, as I am more than happy to send some things home. All boxes will be due back by Tuesday, February 11th.

Please note that our class will be celebrating Valentine's Day on Wednesday, February 12th, as I will be out on the 13th (I have to get my wisdom teeth removed).

Our newsletter for the week can be found in the "Weekly Newsletters" tab at the top of the page.

We had one STELLAR week! We began our new unit of inquiry with an epic snowball "fight!" This got the kids SO excited to learn about weather! So far, we have talked about how the weather changes from day to day. We have also learned about snow, sleet, rain, hail, and wind. I am so impressed with how much information the kids are picking up!

We did not have a STEM challenge yesterday, but did partake in an experiment. We reviewed what we had learned about each type of weather and played "Build a Snowman," to guess which type of weather we were going to create. After "rain" was revealed, we broke up in to teams of 3 and we discussed who was going to have what role in making the rain. Your child would LOVE it if you would ask him or her the outcome of the experiment! How is rain formed?

On another note, we will be celebrating our 100th day of school on Friday, January 31st. We will be celebrating all day, as well as making our own snacks. We need your help in order to make this possible! If you are willing and able to donate any items, please click on this link: https://www.signupgenius.com/go/5080548A5A62FA1F94-100th1

Please have any items sent in by next Friday, January 24th, so I can make sure we have enough supplies for each child. Thank you in advance!

  • Please make sure that your child is reading to you every night for at least 15 minutes. At this point, your child is ready to begin sounding words out and reading to you. Please also make sure that you are filling out his or her reading log and returning it each day. The reading logs are graded.
  • Please also make sure that you are checking your child's blue folder each day and taking out any papers in the "keep at home" side.
  • Please remember that if your child is sick, he or she must be fever free or throw up free for 24 hours (without medication) to return to school, per school policy.
  • Please make sure that your child returns to school each day with his or her book baggie (with book in it). During guided reading, I will be working with your child on a specific reading skill/fluency. Please have your child read his or her book to you at least 2 nights of the week.
  • If your child's work has a "B" at the top, your child is not mastering the skill. If your child's work has an "A" at the top, your child is approaching mastering the skill. If your child's work has an "M" at the top, your child is mastering the skill. If your child is coming home with papers with a "B" or "A" at the top, please work with your child on that specific skill.
  • If your child normally goes to Lion's Den each afternoon is not going to Lion's Den on a certain day, please let me know that your child will not be attending that day.

As always, if you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact me.

Our newsletter for the week can be found in the "Weekly Newsletters" tab at the top of the page.

Our first week back literally flew by! We spent a majority of the beginning of the week reviewing classroom rules and procedures. All I can say is that we ROCKED the socks off of this week! We did not get through every thing that was planned, but we accomplished a lot. One morning we were going over our morning message, per usual, and a student raised their hand to tell me that they noticed that the sun was moving across the board. This literally made my teacher heart EXPLODE! Before we began reading, I had to fill in some letters because the sun was coming through the holes at the top of the curtains, causing the projection to be unclear. When the student told me what he noticed about the sun, we all stopped and started observing the spot where the sun was shining on our message. The kids went WILD when they saw how quickly the sun was moving. The students started asking why it was all of a sudden happening and I started to think about what was going on and telling the students how the sun doesn't just stay in one spot all day, but I, along with them was amazed at how fast the sun spot on the board was moving. I am hoping that we will be able to explore this incident more next week; not our inquiry focus, but hey, we want to know! (:

Yesterday, we continued with our STEM challenge Fridays with another STEM challenge. I gave the students the challenge of creating the longest paper chain using one piece of paper, one roll of tape, and one pair of scissors. As I was walking around checking in with the groups, I was excited to see that each person in each group was collaborating with his or her group mates... What a way to kick off our first Friday back! I will post some pictures I snapped of the challenge on Dojo soon, so be sure to check it out!

December 16-20, 2019

Our newsletter for the week can be found in the "Weekly Newsletters" tab at the top of the page.

We had so much fun on our adventures with Elfie last week! We learned all about the holiday traditions in France, Germany, and Mexico! We still have not found Santa's Naughty or Nice List though... Maybe we will have better luck in Sweden or England this week!

Yesterday, we finished off our Author Study of Eric Litwin and James Dean (author of Pete the Cat" series) by reading "Pete the Cat Saves Christmas." After reading the story, we compared all of the Pete the Cat books that we have read throughout the week and talked about all of the similarities. Then, we took a deeper look in to the book "Pete the Cat Saves Christmas." We talked about how Pete helped Santa in the book and climbed down a chimney to deliver gifts to boys and girls. We were then given the challenge to work together to create a chimney for Santa to go down to deliver gifts, only using marshmallows and toothpicks. The kids did an excellent job communicating and executing their plans. When the timer went off, we came together and tested each of our chimneys. As each group tested their chimneys, we sang, " Give it your all, give it your all. At Christmas we give, so give it your all." Check out our class story on Dojo to get a glimpse of what we came up with!

Our newsletter for the week can be found in the "Weekly Newsletters" tab at the top of the page.

We had one EXCITING week this past week! Elfie surprised us on Monday after we came back from Art! He told us that he needed our help to find Santa's Naughty or Nice List, which led us to discussing how we were going to find his list. We then started preparing for our trip around the world! This week, we will be grabbing our passports and suitcases and traveling to France, Germany, and Mexico!

Before our STEM challenge yesterday, we wrapped up our author study on Jan Brett by reading "The Night Before Christmas." We talked about the sleigh that appeared in a majority of the book. We then were given the challenge to work together to create a sleigh for Santa. While I was walking around, I noticed students saying, "we are going to make the best sleigh ever" and "let's work together!" The power of "WE" and not "me" was apparent and it made my teacher heart explode! Check out our class story on Dojo to see us at work!

November 25-26, 2019

Our newsletter for the week can be found in the "Weekly Newsletters" tab at the top of the page.

I cannot believe that I am saying this, but we officially have TWO more days until Thanksgiving Break! This past week went by so fast, I cannot believe that break is upon us!

Don't forget that our POL is THIS TUESDAY, November 26th at 11:00 PM! You will sign in at the front desk and you will receive a sticker saying you are here for the POL. Please make sure that you arrive in a timely manner. Once it’s 11 AM, someone will bring you down to the pod. This POL is unlike any other POL we have had. Everyone will start at the same place and walk through the pod; almost museum style. Please make sure you stay in the line. This ensures that our project makes sense to you AND that it flows smoothly. Once you’ve made your way through the pod, you’ll head back to the Multi-Purpose Room. Once in the Multi-Purpose Room, you will find your child's place card that he or she made, to reserve their spot with you. If you have a small child, please consider allowing them to sit on your lap so that we do not run out of seats. Once all parents have walked through our pod, we will join you for a song and our feast! You are welcome to sign your child out after. It will not count against you. Please make sure you please fill out the sign out sheet and see Ms. Crimm or me. It will be located on a high top table.

November 18-22, 2019

Our newsletter for the week can be found in the "Weekly Newsletters" tab at the top of the page.

Last week literally flew by! I cannot believe we are a week and a half away from our next POL! We have been hard at work collaborating with our project groups to make this the best presentation yet.

These past couple of weeks, we have been learning about the Pilgrims and the Indians. We have also been comparing their lives and talking about the similarities and differences between both groups. Before our STEM challenge yesterday, we talked about how both the Pilgrims and Indians built their houses and reviewed their specific features. We talked about how each type of house was built to withstand the wind and rain. After reviewing our knowledge, we were given the challenge to break up in to teams and build a house fit for either the Piilgrims or Indians. The conversations that I was hearing walking around were very intriguing. When the timer went off, we ended up with one house built for the Pilgrims and one house built for the Indians. Pictures are to come on Dojo, so keep your eyes out!

November 11-15, 2019

Our newsletter for the week can be found in the "Weekly Newsletters" tab at the top of the page.

Last week was a blast! We read fiction and non fiction books about the First Thanksgiving and the Pilgrims. We learned so much about the Pilgrims' journey to Plymouth! As we read books, we recorded different facts that we learned about both the Pilgrims and Indians. I was truly impressed by the amount of information they were able to comprehend, retain, and write about! It made my teacher heart so happy!

Yesterday, before our STEM challenge, we looked at different pictures of the Mayflower. We discussed how the ship was built to withstand the rough waters and hold over 100 passengers. After our discussion about the Mayflower, we were challenged to make a ship of our own using aluminum foil, straws, tape, and cupcake liners. We split up in to 5 teams and made some AWESOME ships! When everyone was done, we tested out our ships, using marbles as our passengers. As we submersed our ships in water, we added passengers one by one to see how many each ship could hold. We were so excited to see that our ships were able to stay afloat!

This week, we will be separating in to different project groups. Some friends will stay with me, and some will go with Ms. Hyleman or Ms. Reneau. We will be working in our project groups for about 30 minutes each day until our POL on November 26th.

Our newsletter for the week can be found in the "Weekly Newsletters" tab at the top of the page.

WE SURVIVED HALLOWEEN WEEK! We reviewed the different components of maps and learned about cardinal directions (Never Eat Soggy Waffles). We created jack-o-lantern maps and maps of our rooms! We had so much fun reviewing 2D shapes while creating our maps. On Halloween, we even made our own SLIME!

Yesterday, we were challenged to make creature catchers using popsicle sticks, tape, string, pipe cleaners, and cups. Before diving in to the challenge, we talked about what creatures were and what the goal of the challenge was. We also went over the steps to creating our creature catchers. We talked about how each teammate had to share his or her plan before choosing a plan to go with. Check out our story on Dojo to see our creative minds working!

Our newsletter for the week can be found in the "Weekly Newsletters" tab at the top of the page.

We had one FUN week this past week! We went on our first field trip, had a visit from Hugo the Hornet, and ran our very first Fun Run. In the midst of all the fun, we also squeezed in time to look at maps of the world and United States of America. We even explored spherical example of a map (inflatable globe)... yes, we were all geeking out! We explored different parts of each map and talked about how they showed us where different places were. We also talked about how water was often represented by a light blue color, and land was represented by a green color.

This week, we will be creating our own Jack-o-Lantern maps and maps of our rooms. We will also be engaging in some very festive centers!

Please note that Red Ribbon Week is this week:

  • Monday, October 28- Join the fight against drugs! Wear camo.
  • Tuesday, October 29- Peace out to drugs! Wear tie dye.
  • Wednesday, October 30- Footloose and drug free! Wear crazy socks.
  • Thursday, October 31- Say "Boo" to drugs! Wear your halloween costume (school dress code still applies; no costume make-up, masks, canes, sticks, or weapon-like items allowed).
  • Friday, November 1- Don't let drugs ruin your dreams! Wear pajamas.

Our newsletter for the week can be found in the "Weekly Newsletters" tab at the top of the page.

This past week was an absolute blast! To begin our unit of map skills, we were given a map of the school and were told to find the treasure. Before we started looking for the treasure. We discussed what was on the map and what maps were used for. After the kids realized that the map was a map of the school, I showed them where our classroom and asked the students about what they noticed about where our classroom was and where the treasure was. Together, we navigated our way to the treasure. Throughout the week, we explored other maps and learned that maps tell us where to go and that all maps have a title and a key, or legend. We cannot wait to take a deeper dive into maps this coming week!

During our STEM challenge yesterday, we broke up in to 3 teams and created houses for our little bears. Last week, we read, "The True Story of the 3 Little Pigs." I brought in three of my bear "friends," and gave the students the challenge of creating a house for them, so the Big Bad Wolf (classroom fan), wouldn't blow them down. One group made a house out of straw (pipe cleaners), another group made a house of sticks (linking popsicle sticks), and the last group made a house out of bricks (legos). This was the FIRST time, each group worked together without having to go back and revise because there was more than one product being created within the group. WHOOHOOO! By the time the timer went off, we had a brick and a straw house. We came together and talked about how it was okay that one group did not complete their challenge, because they worked very hard the entire time; the pieces just were note quite stable enough to make it to meet the wolf. Check out our class story on Dojo to see what happened!

Thank you to everyone who came out to our first POL! The kids had so much fun showing everyone everything they knew about shapes.

Our field trip has officially been rescheudled! We will be going to MOD Pizza and Wingate Park on October 22nd. I will be reaching out to each of the chaperones soon.

We had a redo of last week's STEM challenge yesterday, and it was a SUCCESS! Each group was supplied with the same amount of toothpicks, marshmallows, tape, and toilet paper rolls. They were given the challenge to build the tallest pizzeria with their materials. When the timer went off, each group had their own building. We talked about how each of the buildings looked similar and I asked the kids how we could make an even taller building. They told me that we could connect all of the buildings to make it taller, so that is exactly what I did. When each of the buildings were connected, we ran in to a little problem. The building was topling over. Ms. Crimm came in and made some revisions and we finally had the tallest pizzeria!

Our newsletter for the week can be found in the "Weekly Newsletters" tab at the top of the page.

We are SO excited for our first POL (presentation of learning) this Wednesday, October 9th! As we have been preparing our materials, the kids have been talking about how much they want to show their parents what they are making (which makes my teacher heart explode with excitement).

This past week was filled with lots of highs and even some lows. During our STEM challenge yesterday, the students were given 50 toothpicks and 26 marshmallows to create the tallest pizzeria. We have been constructing 3D models of shapes for the past 2 weeks and the students were so excited to create their buildings. As I was walking around, I head a couple of groups talking about how they were going to stack cubes on top of each other and that it was really going to work. When the students started to construct, they realized that it was not as easy as they thought it was going to be. The buildings started to fall and there were toothpicks and marshmallows going everywhere. When the timer went off, the kids were feeling defeated. We came together and talked about how our challenge went. Some kids were happy, but some were sad and frustrated. I told the kids that it was totally okay to feel that way, but when something doesn't work out, we figure out how to fix it. We talked about what worked and what didn't work. We also talked about how we could tweak the challenge and add materials that we thought would help with our construction. We came up with new plans, and are excited to try again next week.

Our newsletter for the week can be found in the "Weekly Newsletters" tab at the top of the page.

This past week flew by! We learned how to make connections to stories and connected to each of the books that we read. We also learned that nonsense words help us say words based on our knowledge of letter sounds. We even had a chef come in! The kids absolutely LOVED our guest! As she walked us through how to make rice krispy treats, we went over all of the ingredients and the shapes of each item. We even were able to classify the shapes in to 2D and 3D shapes!

On another note, I have noticed a lot of "I can't" mentalities since we have started to dive deeper in to our curriculum. This gave me the idea of wanting to implement a challenge that I knew all of the students could achieve, to show them that we all have our own ways to achieving things. During yesterday's challenge, the students were challenged to create a bridge, using popsicle sticks and cups to hold 10 bears. After each group completed their bridges, we came together and looked at each product. We discussed how none of the bridges looked the same, but they all served their purposes, to hold 10 bears. I then connected our activity to our every day work. We talked about how each student's work was not going to look the same, but as long as they were trying, we were going to achieve our goals.

Our newsletter for the week can be found in the "Weekly Newsletters" tab at the top of the page.

We had such a fun filled week this past week! We reviewed 2D shapes and introduced 3D shapes and went on a 3D shape hunt around the school and explored different foods. The kids REALLY loved getting to create shapes with marshmallows and toothpicks (the toothpicks were "sides" and the marshmallows were "vertices"). Now, we all know that a cube as 12 sides and 8 vertices!

We reviewed the concept of sink or float and introduced the concept of natural things and man made things. We learned that natural things come from nature and man made things are made by people. Yesterday, my friend "octopus" came to visit and wanted an "octopus sized" umbrella to keep her dry. The students were given the challenge to create an umbrella for "octopus." We noted that water was a natural resource and that the umbrellas were man made. Be sure to check out our class story on Dojo to see what we came up with!

Last week was a BLAST! The kids enjoyed exploring different crackers and seeing shapes within them! They also enjoyed learning about why some objects float and some sink when immersed in water. I was so IMPRESSED with the fact that the students were able to understand what it meant to be more or less dense. Yesterday, the students broke up in to groups and were given different materials to create a boat that would float when immersed in water. As I was walking around, I was blown away by the academic conversation I was hearing!
