Out-of-district students must be approved for an inter-district transfer by the RUSD Pupil Services Department prior to submitting an application.
16. How can I enroll my child?
Due to high demand, parents or guardians of eligible students must submit an application and are entered into a lottery.
17. When can I apply?
Applications for 2025-26 will be accepted online from November 1, 2024, through January 10, 2025.
18. Does my child need to be GATE (Gifted and Talented) identified to apply?
No, GATE identification is not required for admission to Riverside STEM Academy.
19. My child has an IEP, can they apply for Riverside STEM Academy?
Yes. Students with IEPs must meet the eligibility requirements shown in the question above, as do all other RUSD students who wish to enroll at Riverside STEM Academy. If selected in the lottery process, a student with an IEP must have an IEP team meeting at their home school to determine if Riverside STEM Academy is an appropriate placement for the student. RSA does not offer special day (i.e. self-contained) classes.
20. My child is currently in 9th grade (or above). Can I still apply?
Yes. However, your child will be added to the existing waitlists. Spots may not be available for the upcoming year due to high interest.
21. How does the lottery work? What are the odds of getting selected?
A vendor experienced in demography manages the lottery to ensure a diverse student body. The odds are determined by a number of factors including the quantity of applications received. Current RSA 8th grade students have priority to fill 72 spots in 9th grade. All additional eligible candidates are placed in a lottery for selection of any remaining spots.
22. Do siblings of current RSA students have preference in the lottery?
No, Riverside STEM Academy does not give sibling preference. Each student is treated individually with their own lottery number. However, twins will have the option of linking their lottery numbers to ensure they stay together.
23. What should I do if I want to apply for Riverside STEM Academy, but also want to apply for a transfer to another school in case my student is waitlisted?
You can submit an online application to Riverside STEM Academy and simultaneously request a transfer to another school. If your student's lottery number is selected for Riverside STEM Academy, you will be required to sign a transfer form for our program, which will automatically cancel and revoke any other transfer requests submitted.
FAQs About What Happens After You Submit an Application
24. I submitted my application, what happens next?
You will get a confirmation response message indicating that your application has been submitted. Eligible student applications will be assigned a lottery number, which will be sent to custodial parents or guardians via email and US mail. Lottery numbers are not assigned until after the close of the application window on the date designated by the Pupil Services department each year. The transfer window dates can be found on the RUSD Pupil Services website.
26. When will the lottery results be available?
Results are posted on our website approximately 1-2 months after the close of the application window.
28. My child did not receive a spot at the school. Now what?
Your child’s lottery number will be posted on one of our waitlists.
27. My child received a spot at the school. Now what?
Our registrar will reach out to you to complete the registration and transfer forms.
29. I can’t find my child’s lottery number on the waitlists. How can I find it?
Your child's waitlist position depends on the high school of residence that is assigned to your home address. Lottery numbers are listed according to this school assignment. You can find your zoned high school using the RUSD School Locator website: https://webapps.riversideunified.org/apps/SchoolLocator/
If you still can't find your lottery number after checking the school locator, please contact the school at (951)788-7308.
30. What if an accepted student decides not to attend Riverside STEM Academy?
If an accepted student declines enrollment or later withdraws, a waitlisted student may be offered a spot to maintain demographic representation. Once the spot is declined, the student’s name is removed from the waitlist and cannot be added back to the waitlist until the next application window.
31. If my child is on the waitlist, how will I know that a spot becomes available?
Our registrar will notify the parents of waitlisted students when a spot becomes available. Once notified, you will have 48 hours to accept or decline the spot.
32. Are there any special requirements for students joining Riverside STEM Academy?
Incoming 9th grade students must be prepared to enter Accelerated Math 2. The primary concern for high school students is that your current class schedule matches with available offerings at the school. In addition, we need to make sure you stay on track for graduation. It is difficult to transfer into the school after the 9th grade year due to the specialized classes we offer.
