My name is Shaista Yusufali and I'm excited to be a part of the RISE Academy team this year. It's an honor to be able to volunteer with and teach our future generation. I believe that each child is unique and has the capacity to bring a great deal to society, if given the opportunity. Children in middle school, in particular, are at a vital stage in their life between being a child and an adult, and it is wonderful to be part of this change.
As and English teacher I am passionate that English is not limited to the study of literature and poetry; rather it is an opportunity for all students to strengthen their communication skills. In order to enter the larger community as leaders, students must have critical thinking skills and the ability to defend, argue and promote their beliefs and points of view. In our classroom we work on this by critically analyzing readings that provide general knowledge of history and current events, by expressing thoughts and experiences in written forma, and through many opportunities to become eloquent and confident public speakers.
