Joel Duncan's Poetic Drive | April 29 at 11am ET  

We welcome you to join the Modernism & Environment Reading Group on Wednesday, April 29th at 11AM EST, when we will be discussing Joel Duncan’s book Poetic Drive: American Poetry in the Age of Automobility (University of Virginia Press, 2025). We will be joined by the author for part of the conversation.

You can find discount codes to purchase the book here. We will focus on the introduction and the first chapter of the book, which will be emailed to the listserves. We also encourage you to read these two poems (“To Else” and “XIX”) from William Carlos Williams's Spring and All (1923). As ever, we hope you will join us no matter how much or little you’ve managed to read.

We will spend the first half of the conversation discussing Poetic Drive and Williams’s poems and generating some questions for Joel, who will join us for the second half of our conversation after a short break.
