Join us on September 18th at 11am ET to discuss Matt Hooley’s book, Against Extraction: Indigenous Modernism in the Twin Cities (Duke UP 2024). The author will join us for the second hour of the conversation, with a short break in between the hours. 

We will focus on the Introduction and Chapter 1. Feel free, of course, to explore other chapters as well. PDF of the Preface/Intro/Chapter 1 will be shared via our listserv in advance of the session. If you’d like access earlier, please email the organizers.

Our interest in Hooley’s book is twofold: 1) rethinking environmentalism and modernism from indigenous perspectives; 2) as a primer to our upcoming roundtable on transnational archives for the Crossings Symposium. The chapter on Warren in particular speaks to long-standing debates on modernism’s relationship to ethnography and to the ethics of cultural interpretation that will be of interest to many.
