The Spanish program at Rio Grande School develops students’ speaking and listening skills from Early Childhood through 6th grade using a spiral learning approach, where concepts are revisited with increasing depth and context. Younger students focus on conversational confidence through games, songs, stories and role-play, while older students gradually explore speaking, reading, writing and grammar through storytelling. The program also emphasizes cultural connections through art, music, traditions, and collaborations across the school, encouraging students to see Spanish as a meaningful, ongoing journey of language and cultural discovery.

I am Raquel Martín Castilla, and I am delighted to be part of the Rio Grande School community since 2023. I am a native Spanish speaker from Spain. Although my academic degree is in Educational Psychology, my lifelong passion for languages led me to pursue a career in teaching, where I have spent the past 24 years working with students from PK through 12th grade. I strive to create engaging experiences that build confidence and curiosity. My love of traveling has shown me how learning a language allows you to connect with people in a deeper, more meaningful way, and I hope to inspire my students to feel that same sense of connection. My goal is not only to help students learn Spanish but also to foster an appreciation for language as a bridge to culture, communication, and understanding.
