The Kindergarteners used their acting skills to compare and contrast five different versions of a traditional folk tale from Russia called The Enormous Turnip. They explored how the different characters in each story might move and improvised conversations with some of the characters. For example, the students talked to the farmer's wife and tried to convince her to stop doing her chores in order to help the farmer pull up the turnip.
Our final version of the Enormous Turnip story, was a Halloween version called Big Pumpkin. The Kindergarten students enjoyed acting out the story as witches, ghosts, mummies, vampires and little bats. They also practiced their steady beat by playing on the barred instruments as they accompanied the song we added to the story.
The Kindergarten students followed a visual representation of the musical form of this piece of music using movement.
After singing through this book, the Kindergarten students added sound effect instruments for the different sounds in the song.
Snort & Growl: Crow Sounder
Smack Your Claws: Rhythm Sticks
Stomp Your Paws: Tubano Drum
Twitch Your Tail: Maracas
Give a Roar: Thunder Tube
The Kindergarten students practiced using their singing voices to improvise songs about different monster pictures. Students sang their songs to a partner who listened carefully to the clues in the song to try and guess which monster picture the song represented.
On Spark Night, students and their families participated in several different activities using hand drums.
