We had a wonderful start to the school year! The students are highly engaged and participate with great enthusiasm. In second grade español, we began with collaborative games to review last year’s content and to ease back into the language.
We begin our classes with songs and juegos de manos (hand-clapping games).
We continue with oral activities, review games, practice, and the introduction of new topics.
We finish with a closing song or story.
For our first lesson, we built on a topic we started last year. Students created skits where they introduced themselves, asked for each other’s names, expressed how they were feeling, and practiced saying goodbye. We used Me llamo and Yo soy, along with different farewell expressions such as Hasta mañana and Hasta luego. The students were fantastic!
In our next lesson, we focused on the Spanish alphabet and its sounds. We discussed the differences between the English and Spanish alphabets, and students had fun practicing by spelling their names and other words.
Activities like listen and point and fly swatter were a sample of the different ways we used to practice sounds.
