Early in October, students participated in five different learning stations in order to practice skills and strengthen understanding of concepts.
The students worked together to sort a bin of stuffed animals into groups based on the number of sounds in their name. After sorting the animals, the students composed and read four stuffed animal rhythm patterns.
Students explored different sounds on the sound shape drums while creating and reading iconic notation.

The first graders enjoyed this story about the trickster spider from Africa named Anansi. They acted out different scenes from the story in small groups before combining them together into two full story performances in class. They also practiced their melodic playing skills on the barred instruments by playing along with the song we added to the story.
On Spark Night, students and their families participated in several different activities using hand drums.
