Curriculum

A large component of the Career Prep program is preparing students to be successful in earning at least a bronze level National Career Readiness Certificate using the ACT WorkKeys curriculum. This curriculum is aligned with National Career Readiness Certificate Assessments. Once the students complete the competencies or training required in the WorkKeys curriculum, they must score at least a 3 in the areas of Applied Math, Graphic Literacy, and Workplace Documents. Students also complete competencies using Career Ready 101 created by ACT and Knowledge Matters to build workplace and life literacy skills that include financial awareness, career exploration, interpersonal communication, and problem solving. This curriculum is self-paced and online allowing students access both at home and at school to assist them in completing competencies at a pace that works for their individual needs.

Another component of the Career Prep program is preparing students to successfully pass the GED. In Career Prep, students are introduced to concepts through classroom assignments that will help prepare them to be successful in passing the GED or high school equivalency test. Students are exposed to practice tests and given guidance by the classroom teacher in identifying their academic strengths and weaknesses. Once students successfully complete all the requirements of the Career Prep program, they are encouraged to transition to W. R. Rogers and pursue their GED at reduced cost.

The final characteristic about the Career Prep curriculum is that it is not based on the academic calendar. Students must have unsuccessfully attempted at least two years of high school before being accepted into the program. With rolling enrollment, students can apply for the program at any time and complete the program at any time. With the self-paced environment, students are encouraged to complete the program as quickly as possible while earning certificates that align with their career choices. However, students also have the flexibility to balance the needs to home, work, and school to come up with an educational plan that fits their needs.
