Career Prep Program at RVHS

Career Prep is an alternative program unique to Richland School District Two that focuses on job readiness and the life skills necessary for students to successfully enter the adult world. The curriculum Career Ready 101, was developed by ACT and is an online readiness tool to assist students in passing the National WorkKeys exam in the following three areas: Workplace Documents, Applied Mathematics, and Graphical Literacy. In addition to earning the National Career Readiness certificate, students will experience many internship and job shadowing opportunities that may lead to industry certification in a variety of areas. However, students are required to earn industry certification in at least one area. Part of this process may include students taking courses at the Richland Two Institute of Innovation (R2i2). Other opportunities may include ServSafe certification, Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) 10/30 certification, Heating Ventilation and Air Conditioning (HVAC), Forklift Operation, Floor Technician, Herbicide/Pesticide Application, Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA), Pharm Tech, Automotive Tech, Building and Construction Tech, Emergency Medical Responder, and other opportunities as they arise.

The business community in Richland Two is activity involved in the design of the curriculum as well as the training necessary for students to earn the portable employment certifications. In addition to participating in job shadowing and internships in their career of interest, Career Prep students must be employed at the time of graduation and have successfully worked for at least 200 hours with positive evaluations from their manager/supervisor. Students in Career Prep do not earn a high school diploma but are encouraged to transition to the W. R. Rogers Adult Education Center where they can earn their high school equivalency at reduced cost after successfully completing the Career Prep program. Local technical colleges accept Career Prep students who wish to enroll in a post-secondary training or education in one of their certificate areas.
