UITDRUK: Ek kan my gedagtes, gevoelens en idees op my eie spesiale manier uitdruk. My stem maak saak, en ek is trots om te deel wie ek is. Wanneer ek praat, speel of toneelspeel, laat ek my lig vir ander skyn.
EXPRESS: I can express my thoughts, feelings and ideas in my own special way. My voice matters, and I am proud to share who I am. When I speak, play, or act, I shine my light for others.
VAKALISA: Ndiyakwazi ukuvakalisa iingcinga, neemvakalelo, nezimvo zam ngendlela yam eyodwa. Ilizwi lam libalulekile, kwaye ndiyazingca ngokwabelana ngam. Xa ndithetha, ndidlala, okanye ndisenza, ndikhanyisa ngokhanyo lwam.
Over the past few weeks, I have been reminded of the importance of people in making things happen with good purpose and intention. The strength of our community will lie in the genuine, authentic, caring relationships we seek to build through expressive connection.
Expressive connection reveals itself in the power of the greeting. When we acknowledge someone with an authentic greeting, it signals that we see the other and value their presence. I have noticed with concern that this is not practised by all our Rustybugs. Perhaps it requires stronger role modelling from us as the adults and explicit teaching and encouragement to practise greeting all people, irrespective of the relationship.
It lies in the gift of presence. When we actively listen, we give someone our undivided presence and show that what they have to say matters. Stephen Covey's reminder is pertinent: "Most people do not listen with the intent to understand; they listen with the intent to reply". Let us be present in a way that expresses interest.
Expressive connection requires an expression of loyalty and integrity. It shows in the way we speak about others when they are not around; how we protect someone's reputation and honour their boundaries matters.
It celebrates difference through curiosity and openness. Bridging the gap by intentionally learning about other cultures and languages is a powerful bridge-builder and connective tissue within a school community.
As we engage with one another in various forums and ways, let us seek to be a school community that is strengthened by expressive connection!

My name is Eswen Jacob Williams. I am a married man and the proud father of a wonderful son who recently celebrated his first birthday.
Family is the most important aspect of my life, and I cherish every moment spent with my wife and son. They are my greatest source of happiness, motivation, and inspiration.
I have a strong passion for soccer and enjoy both playing the sport and watching matches whenever I have the opportunity.
My name is Ongeziwe Mkosi, I am delighted to join the Rustenburg community 🐞.
I hold an Honours degree in Education. I am passionate about literacy development, multilingual education, and helping children discover the joy of learning.

I also have a deep appreciation for languages, writing, stories and lifelong learning, which extends beyond my work. I love bringing that same sense of curiosity and adventure into the classroom too.
I look forward to getting to know the learners and their families and becoming part of the community.
Belinda Petersen and Neil Ryklieff attended the annual conference of the South African Girls' Schools Association, which was hosted by St Michael's School for Girls, Bloemfontein, held at the Monte Bello Estate from 27 to 29 May. It was the largest conference to date with 156 delegates representing girls' schools from across the country, including independent and public schools. Of course, the Western Cape contingent was well represented with 36 principals, deputy principals and departmental heads from most of our primary and high schools.
The conference theme, Strength in Women, was purposefully and intricately woven into the smallest details, making the experience incredibly meaningful. Leather was used to symbolise strength, with each topic and speaker adding their unique perspective and valuable expertise to support girls' school leaders. Leather is resilient and durable, as it has often been historically used for protection, survival and armour. Leather endures, symbolising heritage, longevity and timelessness. It is connected to nature and also holds cultural and spiritual significance for some.
The speakers were impactful as they explored a range of topics such as self-care, resilience, voice, flourishing, communication and toxic relationships. Listening to Zelda La Grange share about her journey with Nelson Mandela and the powerful storytelling of Michael Charton entitled Strike the Rock were moving and inspiring.
But the conference wasn't only about learning; it was about connecting and supporting. What a privilege to be part of the broader, thriving girls' schools network!

Last week, our musical Rustybugs entertained us with a range of music in assemblies on Monday and Tuesday.

In celebration of Youth Day, on Monday, our Grade 6 girls presented a thoughtful and engaging assembly linked to this term’s value, Express. Through a short dramatic presentation and interactive moments, they reflected on the bravery of the youth of 1976 and reminded us that every voice has value.
The girls encouraged their peers to express themselves with courage, kindness, and respect, showing that young people have the power to make a positive difference in their communities. Their message was a wonderful reminder that while we honour the voices of the past, we also inspire the voices of the future.
On Tuesday, 2 June, our Grade 3 teachers led the Foundation Phase assembly. They shared one of their favourite stories, Giraffes Can't Dance, perfectly bringing to life our Term 2 theme:
"I can express my thoughts, feelings, and ideas in my own special way. My voice matters, and I am proud to share who I am. When I speak, play, or act, I shine my light for others."
The hall was filled with rhythm and joy as the story was read aloud alongside different genres of music, including the waltz, the cha-cha, a lively Scottish reel, and vibrant African music. Through Gerald the Giraffe's journey, and with a special reminder from the wise cricket, the girls were encouraged to always be kind, believe in one another, and confidently shine their unique lights.
The girls thoroughly enjoyed the musical storytelling and left feeling inspired to dance to the beat of their own drums.
A Blast from the Past: Grade 3 Historical Day.
On Friday, the Grade 3 classrooms were transformed into a living time capsule as the girls celebrated Historical Day in the most creative ways possible.
We had an incredible mix of eras under one roof. Some girls threw it back to the vibrant 1980s with bright colours and big energy, others charmingly transformed into adorable old grannies (complete with cozy slippers, as it was also Slipper Day!), and we even had a mini Vincent van Gogh grace us with her artistic presence!
The girls brought history to life by sharing a treasure trove of vintage items during a special Show and Tell. The classrooms were filled with nostalgia as they proudly displayed: Retro Walkmans, iPods, and classic CDs, vintage cameras and family photo albums, old-school handbags and vinyl records, fabulous wigs and costume pieces. To top off a fantastic day, the girls rocked out to some good old '80s music, showing off their best rock-and-roll dance moves. It was a wonderful day of learning, sharing, and stepping back in time!

MUSIC
We were delighted by the wonderful response to this year's Variety Show auditions. A large number of learners auditioned, and the standard of talent on display was truly impressive. Thank you to every learner who had the courage to step onto the stage and share their talents with us.
Successful performers will be announced on Friday, 5 June 2026. While not everyone can be included in the final show, every learner who auditioned should be incredibly proud of their effort, preparation, and willingness to participate. Auditioning takes confidence, and we commend each learner for embracing the opportunity.
We look forward to celebrating the incredible talent within our school community at this year's Variety Show!

On 1 June, our Music Department hosted a delightful Piano, Vocal and Guitar Evening. Families and friends enjoyed an evening of varied performances, featuring solo, duet and trio items presented by our talented learners.
The concert showcased not only the musical growth of our performers, but also the confidence and courage required to step onto a stage and share their music with an audience. Learners performed with enthusiasm and expression, creating a memorable evening of music-making. We are incredibly proud of all who took part and congratulate them on their wonderful performances.
We are excited about Junior Jams, an upcoming concert in collaboration with Rondebosch Boys' Preparatory School.
Designed especially for our younger learners, this special event will bring together young musicians from both schools for an evening of performance, creativity and musical celebration. Junior Jams provides a wonderful opportunity for learners to share their talents, build confidence and experience the joy of performing alongside fellow young musicians.
We look forward to a vibrant evening filled with energy, enthusiasm and memorable musical moments as these young performers take to the stage.
SPORT
Our final fixture of the term against Micklefield School was a fantastic way to end the first half of the winter season. The girls displayed great skill, teamwork, and determination across all age groups, and we were delighted to come away having won almost every match. It was wonderful to see the progress that each team has made throughout the term and the confidence with which they took to the court.
As we reach the halfway mark of the season, the RGJS sport department would like to extend a sincere thank you to all our players, coaches, and staff. The commitment shown by our players at practices and matches has been outstanding, and their enthusiasm for the game continues to make us proud.
Thank you to our coaches for the time, energy, and expertise they invest in developing our girls both on and off the court.
We are also grateful to the staff who support our sporting programme and help ensure that every practice, fixture, and event runs smoothly.
The first half of the season has been filled with growth, learning, teamwork, and many memorable moments. We look forward to building on these foundations in Term 3 and are excited to see what the remainder of the season will bring!
The U9 AB and C as well as the U11A hockey teams, took part in the Herschel Winter Festival. The U9 teams played fun festival-type matches where the girls gained valuable match experience. The U11’s took to the astro in the afternoon, with the finals taking place under the lights.
Our U11’s had a fantastic run to the playoffs, showing skill and determination as they progressed to the evening finals. After a tightly contested semi against Kirstenhof, they made it to the finals where they faced Kenridge. At the end of full time, the scores were 0-0, so they went to play-offs. Kenridge eventually walked away with the win but our girls can be very proud of their silver medals.
Congratulations to Ava Rood 6b and Stella Williams 6c , who have been selected to represent the U12 Zonal A side and Alex Barbour 6b, who has been selected in the Zonal B side. The girls will compete in the U12 Inter-zonal Tournament at the end of July.
