I currently enrolled at CNM completing my Alternative Teaching Licensure to be able to hold a Level 1 Alternative Teaching License from New Mexico in Secondary Education in Social Studies. I will complete my certification in April 2026.
In 2022, I worked as a Back-of-House Venue Manager for the Smithsonian Center for Folklife and Cultural Heritage in Washington, DC, where I managed backstage operations during a large-scale cultural festival. In this role, I coordinated closely with stage managers and festival personnel to ensure the smooth and organized functioning of the venue’s backstage area. I was responsible for maintaining an orderly environment, managing furniture setup, and ensuring that only authorized individuals had access to restricted areas. I welcomed artists upon arrival, distributed credentials, and provided guidance and support throughout the event.
This experience played a significant role in inspiring my teaching career by exposing me to the power of culture, storytelling, and community engagement. Working closely with artists from diverse backgrounds helped me see how history, identity, and lived experiences can be shared in meaningful and impactful ways. I realized that, much like the festival, a classroom can serve as a space where diverse voices are valued and learning is interactive and collaborative.
My trip to Spain and Mexico has had a profound impact on my development as an educator by expanding both my cultural awareness and my understanding of how learning happens beyond the classroom. Attending conferences and performing in music concerts allowed me to engage with diverse audiences and professionals who view education through global lenses. These experiences strengthened my confidence in communication, collaboration, and adaptability skills that I think are essential in teaching. Interacting with musicians, educators, and scholars from different backgrounds inspired me to think more deeply about how the arts can be used as a powerful tool for engagement in my own classroom.
Additionally, visiting museums and historic sites throughout Spain and France brought history to life in a way that textbooks alone cannot achieve. Walking through spaces filled with centuries of art, struggle, innovation, and identity deepened my appreciation for how history shapes people and societies. This experience has influenced my teaching by encouraging me to create more immersive and meaningful lessons that connect students to real-world contexts. It reminded me of the importance of storytelling, representation, and critical thinking when teaching history and culture. Ultimately, this trip has helped me become a more reflective and intentional educator, committed to bringing global perspectives, lived experiences, and a deeper sense of purpose into my teaching practice.
