Progress Monitoring Binders
Your student will bring home a large 3-ring binder bi-weekly.
What is it?
This binder is a collection of your student's quizzes, tests, major grades and benchmark assessments.
What do I do with it?
Review the binder when you receive it.
Sign any grades placed in the "Parent Signature" pocket.
Return the binder on the following school day.
Can I keep the graded papers?
It is important to keep a complete record of their progress throughout the school year, so please do not remove any papers from the binder.
If you would like a copy of any assignment, let me know. I will be happy to send a copy home.
What if I have questions about a grade?
As always, please text, email or call if you have any questions.
What is
MAP Testing?
Measures of Academic Progress [MAP] is a benchmark assessment used to measure your student's current academic abilities in Reading, Math, and Science. After testing is completed, you will receive a copy of your student's scores. We use these scores to determine areas of need in your student's education. If a need exists, your student will be placed in a small group for intervention in those areas of need. I will reach out to schedule a meeting with you if there are any immediate concerns. If you have any questions, please contact me.

Thursday: Chapter 2 Lesson 1: Mental Addition Part 1

How can I support my student with Mental Addition?
Decompose numbers without writing them down.
Example 28 + 31 Example 210 + 420
28 = 20 + 8 210 = 200 + 10
31 - 30 + 1 420 = 400 + 20
8 + 1 = 9 10 + 20 = 30
20 + 30 = 50 200 + 400 = 600
50 and 9 = 59 600 + 30 = 630
So, 28 + 31 = 59 So, 210 + 420 = 630

Daily: This week we will begin daily math routines. Students will receive a classwork packet containing a spiraled review of topics covered prior to 3rd grade; taught in class this year; challenge/logic problems to think about. The student will be expected to utilize class time to complete the pages. Students are given a complete hour each day to complete independent classwork.

How Can I Help My Student in General?
Allow them time to wrestle with a problem before giving support. Ask them to look at examples, reread directions, and try to solve it.
Ask questions that guide them toward the correct answer rather than giving them the answer.
Expect their work to be shown neatly on all assignments. (1 inch graph paper is helpful for lining up numbers.)
Send a note if a concept is not understood by the student.
Students should work diligently for 40 minutes. If the work is not completed, write a note on the assignment explaining the time spent, support given, and area of struggle. Students do not lose freeplay when a parent verifies the time was spent trying.

Weekly Math Schedule Will Include:
A Spiral Review of Texas Knowledge and Skills required for 3rd Graders on the STAAR
5-minute Timed assessment of current math facts based on personal goals.
Direct teaching of new skills using multi-sensory methods
Written Responses
Independent Practice Time combined with small group intervention (MTSS) and Enrichment
Homework Practice for skills taught in class which may include: practice of a recently learned skill; math facts practice; logic problems for enrichment; writing/solving prescribed equations.

Attendance Incentives for 3-5 grades:
Students will be able to earn privileges for continued on-time attendance without early releases. Here's the scoop:
Students with zero absences for the week (Monday-Friday) will receive an extra day's attendance pay: 5 Raven Bucks on Friday.
Students with zero absences for the month will earn a FREE homework pass at the end of each month.
Each additional week of perfect, on-time, all day attendance, will be added to their sign. Students with the highest streaks will be recognized.
Students who miss school without an approved written excuse from a doctor or a parent will complete an Attendance Reflection page to help them understand the importance of attending school every day.
