Henri Matisse (1869–1954) was a very famous painter, sculptor from France. He liked to create works of art with bold bright colors.
When Henri Matisse grew old, he became ill and had to use a wheelchair. Creating large sculptures and paintings became too hard to do alone. He began creating collage cut outs of colored paper with some assistants. He called it “drawing with scissors.”
A collage is a work of art made of many pieces of paper to make a whole new picture
Henri Matisse started with small collages of organic shapes.
Organic shapes are shapes that have no official name. They often imitate shapes of objects in nature.
Eventually Matisse’s collages became as large as rooms.
