Welcome to Relevant Academy and our math classroom!
I am Julia Przybyla-Kuchek (Sha-bell-a-Koo-chek), a math teacher at Relevant Academy. This is my second year with Relevant and first year full time. Math has always been one of my favorite subjects, but also love science and history. I actually love school and learning in general. Never seemed to stop going to school--working on my Ph.D. in Mathematics Education at the University of Georgia currently! That doesn't mean that I never struggled with math! I learned that even when math is difficult, it is rewarding when you persevere!
Here is what I believe about mathematics teaching and learning
Everyone is a math person!
There are many, many different and correct strategies for doing math!
Students can learn from each other by sharing strategies and ways of thinking mathematically.
Problem solving and critical thinking skills are the foundation of math and translate into real-word skills
Quick tricks and tips for solving problems are also quickly forgotten. (Give a man a fish, he eats for a day. Teach a man to fish, he eats for a lifetime.)
Focusing on making sense of problems and persevering in problem solving help students to solve a wider range of problems and think critically!
More About Me
I live in Lansing, MI with my spouse and 4 wonderful dogs (Drover, Bea, Rumba, and Clyde). We enjoy taking them to the park as often as we can. In addition to teaching, I have two small businesses--very small business.
My hobbies include reading young adult novels, making macramé projects, playing card games like Euchre and strategy board games with friends and family, and tending to my plants. I also enjoying doing Wordle daily and am learning Spanish on Duoling.
My extra time goes to volunteering for an animal shelter running their social media. I fostered 12 dogs through this shelter (Adopt, Don't shop!) My favorite place to be in at a cottage on a lake in Michigan. When I am not at school or home, you might find me in a local coffee shop writing.
Although I grew up and went to schools in Michigan, I also lived in Georgia for 7 years while working on my Ph.D. (Go Dawgs!) I earned my teacher certification from Ferris State University , my Master's Degree in Mathematics from Central Michigan University and my Ph.D from the University of Georgia.
While in Georgia, I taught college students that wanted to be elementary teachers or high school math teachers. I had the pleasure of working with these preservice teachers in elementary, middle, and high schools where they learned to focus on student thinking and mathematical discussions, while teaching a wide range of students. I have worked on math with students at all grade levels, including elementary and college students and student athletes, and apply these experiences in the classroom by identifying the foundational concepts from elementary school and building upon those with high school mathematics.
