Strengthening Communication at the Secondary Level by Using CORE Vocabulary

In the secondary setting, we need to prepare students for the transition to adult life. Strong communication skills are important to help our students increase participation and self advocacy in life. In this session, we will discuss ways to strengthen student communication through CORE vocabulary. We will also discuss ways that we use CORE with both verbal and non-verbal students. Discussion will include a description of the descriptive teaching method which helps to incorporate CORE vocabulary into the academic day.

Some outcomes to expect:

1. The participants will identify at least 3 ways to incorporate communication supports in the secondary setting.
2. The participants be able to identify the key components of descriptive teaching.
