High School Equivalency - GED
The GED® test comprises four (4) subjects, broken into separate exams. You don’t have to take all four tests at once - you can space them out however it suits you and go at your own pace. Here is an overview of what is on the GED by subject area.
To earn a GED certificate, students must take and pass four (4) subtests:
Mathematical Reasoning
Basic Math
Geometry
Basic Algebra
Graphs and Functions
Science
Reading for Meaning in Science
Designing and Interpreting Science Experiments
Using Numbers and Graphics in Science
Social Studies
Reading for Meaning in Social Studies
Analyzing Historical Events and Arguments in Social Studies
Using Numbers and Graphs in Social Studies
Reasoning Through Language Arts
Reading for Meaning
Identifying and Creating Arguments
Grammar and Language
Essay Response
Students must earn a minimum score of 145 on each subtest. Tests are given offsite at a testing center.
The Simpson County Literacy Center offers FREE classes to help students prepare for the GED tests. First, a diagnostic test is given to determine if courses are needed or if a student is test-ready. If classes are required, students may attend weekly. All learning materials and school supplies are provided at no cost to the student.
When a student is test-ready, we will assist in setting up their GED account. Before taking the exams, the student must pass the GED Ready Test for each subject area. After passing, registration for their official exam is arranged. Test times are available mornings, afternoons, and evenings at an in-person testing center. Location options depend on the student and their comfort in getting to their chosen testing center, the closest being in Bowling Green.
Each ready test costs $7.00, and the official exam costs $30.00. The State of Kentucky is currently covering the cost of ready tests and exams (these cost waivers are subject to change without warning from the State).
Tests do not have to be taken together - students may take a single test when ready, even if they are still preparing for tests in other subject areas.
***NOTE: To take a GED exam, students must show a state-issued photo ID, such as a driver's license.
