Marsha Turner

Dear 6th Grader,

I am so excited to work with you this coming year in English Language Arts and Social Studies. I wanted to introduce and tell you a little bit about myself. My name is Marsha Turner and this is my third year as a teacher and my 15th year working here at our wonderful Rutland Town School. I have lived in Rutland Town my entire life. My three sisters and I have all attended and graduated from RTS. I am a proud alumni of this school and look forward to helping your student achieve high goals this year.

Last year's English Language Arts students all wrote an advice letter. The items they felt were the most important were homework, being organized, and asking for help.

This first piece of advice is homework. In middle school, there is more homework. However if you manage your time wisely it should not be a problem. Many of my students have spoken about not waiting until the last minute to complete an assignment. They have also mentioned about handing in your work, because another assignment will be coming and then it will pile up. It is really important to finish and hand in your work on time, so that you have less stress and less items on your to-do list.

The next piece of advice is being organized. My students have said that it is important to keep the work organized by class. This is extremely helpful for tests. On some of the tests I give, I allow students to use work or notes. However, you need to have these notes in a place you can find them. It is also helpful to be organized, so you can get to class on time and be prepared for that class.

The last piece of advice is asking for help. Several of my students asked questions of me, their fellow and older students. It is important that you ask questions about items you do not understand. This is a skill that will help you in the future. If you do not understand the assignment then you can not do the best job that you can.
