At Stoneridge, we have created a program that includes the essentials of physical education: aerobic capacity, muscular strength, flexibility, and body composition. We do that by creating an environment that is safe, encouraging, as well as establishing high expectations for behavior. We believe that every student is capable of trying their best, being kind and encouraging to others and having a positive attitude, and we are here to help them achieve expectations. Our hope is that every student finds a sport and/or activity that they love that will have them staying active, even beyond elementary school.
If your student needs to be excused from PE, please fill out the following form. Please note which activities your child needs to be excused from. There is also a place to upload a medical note, too.
All students should be wearing CLOSED-TOED SHOES to PE. We would prefer something similar to a tennis/running shoe. During the warmer months, please make sure to dress in lightweight clothes as it gets really hot on the blacktop. In the cooler months, we encourage students to dress in layers as they will get warm as they move their bodies. When it is rainy, please bring an alternative to rain boots as those shoes make running and playing very difficult for many students.
We always will consider the weather when choosing the location of PE for the day. If it is too hot/cold or rainy, we will move indoors.
We would love to see every student bring a positive attitude and willingness to play when they come to PE. We also encourage every student to bring a water bottle to PE. If there are any items needed for medical purposes, please create a plan in the office to have those necessary items out at PE.
What to Expect in PE at Stoneridge
In Kindergarten PE, we are here to make movement fun. We begin our year by teaching our students about general space, self-space, and how to move through space without running into people. We also spend a huge chunk of our year teaching students how to win and lose, positively participate with others, and how to take turns. We teach skills which include but aren't limited to: the underhand and overhand throw, underhand roll, locomotor skills, jumping rope, and exposing them to several sports.
A typical day in Kindergarten PE begins with stretchies and a dance. We then move to learning a new skill and playing games to work on said skill. Once a month, our kindergarteners will run a modified lap on the playground. Our PE sessions are 35 minutes long.
In the primary grades, we are learning how to refine those skills started in kindergarten and moving into practicing more specific sports skills. We also continue to learn how to win and lose, show sportsmanship, and play together as a team. This year, our primary students will have THREE days of PE, which we are really excited about!
To see a typical day in 1st - 2nd grades, look below. Each day of PE is 35 minutes long.
Our third grade students take a BIG step up in learning the foundational skills of sports, preparing them for upper grade PE. We build upon the skills learned in 1st - 2nd, and we add more skill-based games to refine our movement patterns. Students continue to come to PE for three 35-minute sessions. Our schedule looks similar as above, with some added bonuses.
We take a huge jump with our running routines. In addition to the warm-up laps, we add a monthly timed half-mile run! These runs will take place on one Monday per month. In March, your third grader will practice their first timed mile run! They will practice this run through May.
We also begin our monthly fitness stations working on the following skills: arm strength, sport specific skills, stamina, whole body strength, core strength, leg strength, and flexibility and balance. We use our body weight to perform these activities, as well.
Our 4th and 5th grade students move to PE for only two days per week, but their PE time increases from 35 minutes to 53 minutes. We are expecting our students to increase their stamina, build endurance, and refine those base skills learned in the primary grades. We continue to work on sportsmanship, and there is a big emphasis on building empathy and compassion in team games and activities.
Our 4th and 5th grade students also begin running TWO timed runs per month, the mile and the half mile. These timed runs are built into the program to not only build endurance and stamina, but to also prepare students for the weekly running expectations at the middle school level. We place a huge emphasis on competing against themselves as they work to improve their running times throughout the year. You will see medal boards in our MPR for those who have a passion for running and competition. As in everything, we do understand that not everyone will find running as their personal strength. There is also a "Shaved Ice" board located in the MPR for those that are "shaving" time off of their runs!
Our 4th and 5th grade students also have monthly Fitness Stations that include: arm strength, sport specific training, stamina, whole body strength, core strength, leg strength, and flexibility and balance. These are all bodyweight based activities and students are expected to set goals for themselves and record their results monthly.
Our 4th and 5th grade students also have an opportunity to build their leadership portfolio by becoming PE Leaders. Our leaders not only lead dances, warm-ups, and more in class, they also lead our entire school in the monthly dance on Friday Morning Assemblies! Applications are open at the beginning of every trimester to provide multiple opportunities to lead. Applications can be found in Mrs. Robertson's page in CLEVER.
Mrs. Robertson is currently in her 25th year of teaching! She was formerly a classroom teacher (teaching 3rd - 6th grade) and moved to PE in 2021. Her degree in Kinesiology prepared for teaching PE, and she is finally able to apply her college experience, as well as her classroom experience, into teaching PE at Stoneridge. She has two children. Her daughter, Riley, attends Chico State and is a Construction Management major as well as a member of the Crew Team (after a lifetime of being a basketball player). Her son, Chase, currently attends Granite Bay High where he is a part of the Varsity Basketball program as well as part of the Men's Volleyball team. He also plays soccer through GBFC. Mrs. Robertson's husband, Mr. Rob, is a PE teacher at a neighboring junior high school where he coaches volleyball and basketball. He is also an assistant coach of the men's basketball team at Granite Bay High. To say we are a sports family may just be an understatement. Mrs. Robertson enjoys playing volleyball, paddleboarding, pickleball, and chilling with a good book on a beach and being as close to the ocean as possible. She is an avid fan of the GS Warriors, the LV Raiders, and of course, the San Francisco Giants!
Ms. Beth has been a PE aide for three years. She was a former soccer player, and has a family of soccer players. Her daughter played soccer for Folsom Lake College. Her son, Zach is a student at Roseville High where he is a member of the Men's Soccer team and also a member of the Tennis Team. Her oldest, Patrick, was a member of the water polo and swim team at Roseville, too. To say that the sports gene runs in her family, too, is another understatement. Ms. Beth enjoys playing with her Golden Retriever, Bob, spending time with her family, and coming up with new and exciting recipes to try out!
We love our Stoneridge Timberwolves and can't wait to see all that they accomplish this year and beyond!
