Grade 6 Expectations
In Grade 6, instructional time should focus on five areas:
(1) connecting ratio and rate to whole number multiplication and division and using concepts of ratio and rate to solve problems;
(2) completing understanding of the division of fractions and extending the notion of number to the system of rational numbers, which includes negative numbers;
(3) writing, interpreting, and using expressions and equations;
(4) deepening understanding of the area, surface area, and volume; and
(5) developing an understanding of simple probabilities and statistical thinking.
Please note that while every standard/topic in the grade level has not been included in this overview, all standards should be included in the instruction.
IM v.360 is the District’s adopted curriculum for Grade 6. Teacher guides and materials are not meant to be used as scripts. Before using these materials, do the math and read the teacher's guide. In general, lessons are designed for 45-minute long periods. Some lessons might take up to 2 instructional periods, therefore only 3 to 4 lessons are suggested per week. Please use your professional judgment and the needs of students as you plan for and enact Math instruction.
