Highway 89
I was driving down the highway late at night,
The road was empty and cold,
My headlights were the only thing I could see,
Cutting through the dense fog,
The air felt strange, almost like it was still,
Like the world was holding its breath,
I turn down the radio,
Trying to stay awake,
Then I see a deer standing in the middle of the road,
Its eyes glow in the lights,
I slammed the brakes,
Hoping that I wouldn’t hit it,
But it just stood there,
I immediately knew something was wrong,
Its legs were bent at the wrong angles,
Its head tilted too far to the left,
My car came to a complete stop a couple feet away,
Then the deer began to rise taller,
Its skin peeled away as it began to morph,
Its horns grew outward in different directions,
Its mouth cracked open,
It let out a terrifying creak,
My body froze,
My mind still racing,
I pressed the gas pedal as hard as I could,
Tires screeching on the road,
The creature shrinks in my rear view mirror,
Still standing, still watching,
It smiled as I sped away,
And the night swallowed it whole.
