The Hallway After Midnight
The lights flicker, hum, then die,
Shadows crawl where whispers lie.
Wind strongly whips around each corner.
Lockers breathe a ghostly moan,
I walk the halls, but not alone.
My footsteps echo, sharp and small,
Down endless rows of a peeling wall.
The big exit sign above the door gleams.
The air feels thick, the floorboards creak,
Something stirs that does not speak.
A door swings wide without a sound,
Papers twist and spin around.
A student runs fast from one door to the other.
The clock is stuck at twelve-oh-four,
I shouldn't be here anymore.
My phone light shakes, the screen turns red,
Did someone text me from the dead?
“Why didn’t you come to school James, I miss you”
I read the words - they spell my name,
Each letter burning, bright with a flame.
I run, but halls keep folding back,
Like how nightmares drown in endless black.
Will I be able to go?
And when I reach the exit door,
Reflecting a face I don’t know anymore.
It smiles at me, all pale and wrong,
And hums my favorite childhood song.
I close my eyes, I start to pray.
Hoping it'll just go away.
But I'm the ghost they chased away.
