My mother said to look outside –
Upon the rolling sea –
The colors on the meadow wide –
As lovely as can be.
The shadow fell upon the earth –
And all was bleak again –
The wind blew in and laughed with mirth –
A darkened life ahead.
I started to turn back around –
Back to her warm embrace –
The darkness followed close behind –
I could not see it’s face.
In the cottage the fire burned –
It slowly warmed the room –
Mother huddled quietly yet –
I could not shake the gloom.
