House
Floorboards of the old house creak.
The whispering wallows weep.
Chirps erupt from a nearby bog.
Souls disappear into the endless fog.
Fragile windows are broke.
The dusty chimney lacks a scent of smoke.
Cobwebs grow on the old rotting oak, enveloping it like a ragged cloak.
Water drops from the high, hollow, moldy ceiling–
A ceiling that is concealing what I am feeling.
The surface of my bare knuckles are bruised.
A crow is perched across the room–
Staring into my soul, its eyes fixed and amused.
Vintage wallpaper is torn to shreds.
Thousands of bugs roll across mud covered beds.
Silence grows through the open house.
Trees in the woods shuffle with every stir of every dead mouse.
Echoes of a curdling scream makes the crow run rampant.
Cracks and holes in the roof let the moonlight in.
The floor is cold where it now touches my skin.
The crow grows stale and plots my demise.
I stay where I lay, and cannot rise.
My fingertips have turned into a deep blue.
Tension in the dry house became something new.
Wax from lit candles drips and dries on my grey face.
Thoughts breeze through my mind like the wind.
How did I end up in this place?
A clock ticks from above, as I am below.
Its last tick is faint and low.
The crow spreads its wings and sharpens its claws to cling.
One last breath manages to escape from my mouth.
I think I’m gonna die in this house.
