Welcome to English 8!

11/13 - Writing time; Grammar- subject verb agreement; Read: The Giver 10-15, Wrinkle in Time 7-9; 4th block: Nonfiction Retest

11/14 - Subject-verb practice on "No Red Ink." 3rd Block - Read novels; 4th block - Fiction and poetry paired texts

11/15 - Quiz: Subject-verb agreement; 3rd block - Socratic Seminar; 4th block - Fiction and poetry paired texts

11/16 - BENCHMARK 2 - Reading focus. 3rd block - Finish novels

11/19 - Because school was cancelled, 3rd block will take the benchmark today.

11/20 - 3rd block - finish novel and double entry journals; 4th block - benchmark

Week 13

11/5 - Finish Horror Stories (due today!). 3rd block - Work on your independent reading book project.

11/6 - Writing time; Grammar - pronouns (review for agreement rules); 3rd block - work on your independent reading book project. DUE TODAY! 4th - Nonfiction review

11/7 - Writing time; grammar - simple subject-verb agreement; 3rd block - New novels, either The Giver, Gathering Blue, or A Wrinkle in Time. Introduce Double Entry Journals.

11/8 - Writing time; grammar - compound subject-verb agreement; 3rd block - read and work on DEJ; 4th block - Nonfiction review

11/9 - Writing time; grammar - questions with subject-verb agreement; 3rd block - read, work on on DEJ, and write question for discussion on Monday. 4th block - Nonfiction test


Week 12

10/29 - Grammar: Dialogue; 3rd - "The Raven" /4th - "The Monkey's Paw"; All classes - Complete plot diagram for horror short story

10/30 - Grammar: Writer's binoculars; 3rd - Part 1 "The Monkey's Paw"/ 4th - Poetry; All classes - work on rough draft of horror short story

10/31 - Happy Halloween! Grammar: More writer's binoculars; 3rd - Part 2 "The Monkey's Paw"/ 4th Poetry; All classes - work on rough draft of horror short story

11/1 - 3rd - Finish "The Monkey's Paw"; All classes - Have a complete rough draft by the end of class/day.

11/2 - No School :)

**Horror Short Stories are due Monday 11/5. 3rd Block - Have your independent reading book read by Monday 11/5. After submitting your story, you will work on your project.

Week 11

10/22 - Writing time; Grammar - Commonly confused words notes; 3rd - Horror Genre articles and top ten list; 4th - "Tell-Tale Heart Comic" finish for HW if not done in class.

10/23 - Writing time; Grammar - Commonly confused words notes; 3rd - Finish list, background on Poe, choose Horror story/novel; 4th- Review "The Tell-Tale Heart" and quiz

10/24 - Writing time; Grammar - Commonly confused words practice; 3rd - Read "Tell-Tale Heart", begin comic; 4th - Read "The Monkey's Paw"

10/25 - Writing time; Grammar - Commonly confused words quiz; 3rd - Finish comic, take quiz; 4th - VDOE questions for "The Monkey's Paw." If time, read play version

10/26 - Writing time - Begin planning horror story; 3rd - Read and analyze "The Raven"; 4th - Vocabulary practice; read "The Veldt"

Week 10

10/15 - Writing time; Grammar - Commonly confused words; vocabulary - EGOTS; NF review - test is tomorrow! 3rd block - You will get the assignment for your nonfiction project. Due FRIDAY 10/19

10/16 - Writing time; Grammar - Commonly confused words; NF Test;

10/17 (End of 1st nine weeks)** - Writing time; Grammar - Commonly confused words; 3rd block - work on NF project; 4th block - work on projects/corrections

**All missing work for the 1st quarter is due to me by Wednesday 10/17, which is the last day of the 1st nine weeks

10/10 - Writing time; Grammar - Capitalization Review; Nonfiction article " How Pizza Conquered America" and "Sushi Takes Over"

10/11 - Writing time; Grammar - Their/there/they're; Nonfiction quiz

10/ 12 - Weekly paragraph; EXTRA CREDIT DUE!

Vocabulary Collector is due on Monday 10/15

  • One symbolic representation; you chose the other three. All four activities must be different.
