Harvest Feast is a continued tradition that is so similar each year and yet always feels like a totally new experience! Is that because of the type of weather we are having on the day, the children who bring new energy to our groupings or the innovative ways our teachers shape this curricular experience for the children? It's a little bit of everything. Team work, collaboration and helpfulness are the root of why we value this day. Being on campus and seeing each group participate in varying ways, bringing the dishes they cooked to share, remembering memories of past Harvest Feasts with table mates and collectively contributing to a school wide Stone Soup that gets more delicious every year fuels us up and reminds us that together we can make amazing things happen!
Community celebrations foster so many connections to each other and the wider world around us! Cooking and following recipes helps children practice actual life math. Doubling, tripling and even quadrupling measurements to make sure there is enough for everyone to get a taste provides opportunities for fractions to tangibly be explored. Cranking the apple peeler uses big body movements and hand-eye coordination as well as turn-taking, patience and cooperation. Understanding the way and why plants grow provides a scientific lense on the food we enjoy! Harvesting colors from native and invasive plants and using the solutions to dye yarn and cloth connects us to our environment. Using the bounty from our 3 Sisters garden allows children to make connections to Indigenous teachings and practices. Kids teaming up to count cutlery, hauling and prepping tables, making decorations, stoking fires and all the hustle and bustle of meeting a lunchtime deadline turns into a glorious communal gathering where everyone's hands were a part of cultivating a nourishing meal, sending us off on break with full bellies and grateful hearts!

The big day finally arrived, and the excitement was undeniable! After all our dedication and teamwork, we were able to come together as a community to celebrate everything we’ve accomplished. It was a moment to reflect on the effort, care, and passion we poured into our gardens throughout the season. Even better, we had the chance to taste the many different vegetables, and herbs we’ve grown. Each bite was a delicious reminder of just how impactful and rewarding our work has been. The event wasn’t just about the harvest itself, but about the connections we’ve built and the shared pride we felt seeing our gardens come to life. We exchanged stories, explored new flavors, and everyone enjoyed the sense of unity that comes from working toward a common goal. It was a day filled with gratitude, joy, and proof that when we work together, we can grow so much more than just food.
