HARVEST FEAST 11/18/22
HARVEST FEAST 11/18/22
Harvest Feast is a special day at The Randolph School where all classes come together to share a special feast, lovingly prepared by all the different groups. This year the Barn Owls decided to make Johnny Cakes over the fire, using fresh Randolph cornmeal, ground by hand from the corn grown in our “Three Sisters Garden”. Like any special celebration, preparations began early on in the week.
First, the Barn Owls had to figure out how many Johnny Cakes they would need to make. We got a count of 66 students and 17 staff members. They decided that the 83 people would be a little easier to work with if we made it a friendly number of 90 (to account for anyone we may have missed, or if anyone drops theirs!)
Then we had to really dive deep into some math to figure out how many times we not only had to multiply the recipe by, but also how much of each ingredient we would need to have in order to feed all these people! As one large group we figured out that each recipe makes 12 Johnny Cakes, so we would need to make 8 batches to have enough for 90 people.
Then, we broke up into 2 smaller groups and used unifix cubes as manipulatives to represent quarters (1 cube), halves(2 cubes), three quarters (3 cubes) and wholes (4 cubes) for each ingredient to help figure out the final totals.

We went step by step for each ingredient, multiplying the ingredients by 4 and then doubling them to get to 8 times. (Kiddos decided to do it this way as they said they knew their doubles fact of 4 + 4 = 8, so 4 doubled, or 4 x 2 would also = 8. By using the manipulatives, and working together, they were doing multiplication before they even realized it! (And they were super excited when they realized they
Finally, it was the day of the feast! Barn Owls worked together to mix the ingredients and form the batter. With the help of some kiddos, Big Lewis got the fire started & it was time to get cooking! We dropped small quantities of batter onto the hot pans, watching for the edges to brown. Once the edges started to brown, it was time to flip the Johnny Cakes.
We are happy to report that no Johnny cakes survived the feast! Once our bellies were full, there was a ton of work left for everyone to do - our task was to clean a mountain of dishes! Once the group hauled the cart of dishes from the back field, each Barn Owl settled into a role and got the job done with surprising speed and efficiency, and a lot of laughs (not so surprising). We’ve all heard the saying “Lots of hands make little work,” and that was the case today!
