What a pleasure it was for the Neighborhood grownups to join us for our storytelling event!
Thanks so much for the Neighborhood families who joined us last Friday for our first annual community Storytelling event! It was fun to watch your children’s pride in taking ownership of their storytelling deck of cards and showing you how we play the story building game. We’ve attached a video of the Robin’s playing this game. It shows how the children give each other attention and listen to each other, and accept different ideas. It also shows how the children collaborate to connect their characters and actions into a cohesive and often very funny story.
Much prep work was involved in getting ready for this event. First of which was making a bunch of character and action cards to build a Neighborhood deck. We talked to each other about adding details using adjectives and adverbs and gave them space to add silly features to their cards. This was a popular activity during morning work and choice time for a few weeks. As we used the cards during our morning meetings, the children practiced good listening skills and imaginative collaboration.
The children were also very interested in sprucing up our outdoor spaces, as their parents don’t often get to see the lean-tos. The children swept the floors, helped collect older art off the walls and made new watercolor paintings to proudly exhibit. Then they noticed the wood chips at the center of the stump circle were no longer helping to absorb the mud. They armed themselves with shovels and wagons and went to defeat the wood chip “monster” pile near the Carriage House. They pulled those heavy carts, dumped the wood chips into a pile and spread them out. The children worked hard on composing and creating a welcome sign to their parents using magnetic letters. When high winds that morning tossed the sign onto the ground, they stoically said, “That’s OK, we can make it again.” And they did.
All the work the children did leading up to this sweet event will continue to appear in the literacy work that presents itself in every aspect of their school day. Thank you for supporting your children’s learning and sharing them with the USN teachers every day!
