At Randolph School we love trees! Just as much as we love singing together as a community. Over the years we have found creative ways to link maple sugaring, our science curriculum and community sing-a-longs. The result is our Wassail that takes place at Winter Celebration.
Wassailing has its origins in pagan England when apple farmers would gather in the fields around the solstice and sing songs and make merry as they wished for a bountiful spring harvest while warding off any evil spirits that might be lurking about.
The children have adapted an old Wassailing song and changed the lyrics to reflect our sugar maple trees.
Another important aspect of our curriculum is learning about the dormancy stage in a tree's life cycle. The trees are preparing for the colder months by slowing down and entering a dormant phase that is characterized by a cessation of active growth and fixing of terminal buds. The children have made the connection between dormancy and sleep. And so we sing lullabys to the trees as well. Here are the lyrics to the various songs we will be singing at Winter Celebration. Practice with your kiddos and come on Friday ready to sing and join in the fun!
