Mrs. Callender

English 8

Welcome

Through Balanced Literacy, students will explore the concepts of their role in an ever evolving society. We will focus on the concepts of leadership, the hero's journey, and a person's place in both the community and society. Our goal is to accomplish this through readers' choice texts, poetry, and class works. We also explore these ideas through complex research writing assignments, informative tasks, and an independent exploratory project.

In the area of literature, eighth grade students will continue to develop their critical and interpretive skills by analyzing short stories, dramas, and novels. Whether independently, as a class, or in book groups, students are encouraged to actively read, jot, and discuss reactions to the text with peers. Reading is an interactive activity.

An awareness of purpose and audience is also reinforced in student writing assignments as students become more skilled in the use of variety in paragraphs and sentences. In addition, communication skills are reinforced by focusing on elements of usage, mechanics, grammar, and spelling. In speaking, students practice and deliver a variety of speeches, plays, scripts, presentations, and projects. Technology will be infused throughout the year in a variety of methods, including Performance-Based Assessments that require the students to collaborate and use 21st Century Skills to determine a problem and find a solution using past knowledge and self-direction. Lessons and assignments will be built upon and assessed using the Benchmarks for Critical Thinking Rubric adopted by the Ramsey School District and the Profile of a Ramsey Graduate. The skills of asking good questions, using logic and evidence, analyzing and processing information, making connections, and reflecting will be reinforced throughout the year allowing students to reach the exemplary level. By year’s end students will be more articulate in expressing themselves and interpreting the world around them.
