In the Spotlight

We would like to put the spotlight on the following retirees and wish them all the best in their future endeavours. Thank you for all you have done for Ramsey!

Wendy Adair

Wendy has worked as a Special Education teacher for 33 years and has spent the last 18 years in the Ramsey School District. Some of Wendy's best memories of working in Ramsey have been watching the growth of her students and the wonderful relationships with her Hubbard Family.

Wendy's plans for retirement include: playing golf in Vermont, biking at the beach, time with her family, and the opportunity to catch up on her reading.

Patty Bale

Patty has worked as the Principal's Administrative Assistant at Smith School for the past 18 years and has thoroughly enjoyed her time at Ramsey. During her tenure, she was co-president of ROPA and secretary executive with the REA when they merged. Patty has worked with three wonderful principals during her time at Smith and feels blessed to have worked with a great staff at Smith and the District.

Patty is looking forward to settling into retirement in the new home they bought in St. James Plantation, Southport, North Carolina.

Judy Copeland

Judy has been a speech and language therapist in the Ramsey schools for 25 years. She runs a weekly Speech/Language group in the Multiple Disabilities class at Ramsey High School, where she and her husband, Bob, coordinate lessons involving music, movement and language. Judy also served the REA as a Representative for four years and as the Building Executive for two years.

Judy is looking forward to a trip to a Music Festival in Asheville, North Carolina in September, walking at more reasonable hours and sleeping a little later, doing some private work in speech therapy, visiting her granddaughter Norah on weekdays and visiting her next grandchild on others (due this November!).

Robert Copeland

Bob joined his wife, Judy, in the Ramsey Special Education family in 2011. He began working in the MD program at the High School. His favorite teaching activity was music; he really enjoyed playing the guitar and singing with his students.

Bob looks forward to spending more time singing, playing guitar, reading, swimming and walking.

Debbi Dunne

Debbi spent ten years teaching in Catholic schools before joining the Ramsey School District in 1986. She taught third grade every year except one! Debbi also coached RHS's football cheerleading team during her first four years. She has established an amazing learning community and a "class that runs itself."

In retirement, Debbi looks forward to spending longer days in Cape Cod in their second home and taking trips to Fiji and national parks.

Gabe Karpinecz

Gabe has been a bus driver for the Ramsey School District for 11 years. He has enjoyed the work environment and the comradery of his co-workers.

Gabe plans for retirement include traveling, especially to his favorite vacation spot, Hawaii and spending time with his grandchild.

Robin Klein

Robin taught for 12 years in Schenevus, NY before beginning her teaching career in Ramsey in the fall of 1987. She taught third and fourth grade at Hubbard and Tisdale. Robin always had a classroom full of the "best books," art and writing projects to accompany them, and even matching outfits!

Robin is an avid Mets fan, been to many stadiums throughout the US, enjoys running and has embraced technology, becoming a "regular" on Facebook and reconnecting with previous students.

Bruce Komar

Bruce has been in the Ramsey School District for 21 years, but has decided this is the right time to retire from his position as night custodial supervisor. To convey their love and appreciation of Bruce, the staff had the following things to say:

  • "Thank you for your cheerfulness, sense of humor, and pearls of wisdom." - Margo Hollands
  • "...he's such a genuine guy." - Andria Nemeth
  • "...he will be sorely missed." - Cheryl Maxwell
  • "Bruce is the best!" - Kristin Cafiero

And the list goes on...

Robert Marino

Bobby was a big presence in Ramsey High School, where he worked for 11 years as a custodian. The high school staff had the following to say:

  • "he was happy and enthusiastic." - Gina Altiero
  • "I will miss Bobby's big smile and teasing." - Shirley Pflugfelder
  • "He was a major part in building the community feel we enjoy here at RHS." - Maria Mitchell

Christine Murphy

Chris knew from the time she was 12 years old that she wanted to teach. She began her teaching career in a parochial school in NY, continued in Clarkstown, NY and then, in 1989, she was hired by the Ramsey School District as the first CCM instructor in a 7th grade class. She had the privilege of teaching special education in all five schools.

In retirement, Chris is looking forward to rebuilding her home, travelling with her husband, sing and travel with the New Jersey Choral Society, play golf, do yoga and catch up on her reading.

Beth Papaz

Beth came to Tisdale 23 years ago as a protege of Dr. Susan Morton, former Tisdale principal. She has taught every grade level at Tisdale except first grade and she has been in third grade for the past 11 years. Anyone who knows Beth, knows that she puts her "heart and soul" into everything she accomplishes.

Beth and her husband are building a home in Bethlehem, PA. Their son and his family also live in PA and are expecting their 3rd child this November. They are looking forward to having them nearby. Beth is also looking forward to having the freedom and flexibility to fly out to Indiana to see her daughter and her family. In addition, Beth is looking forward to spending time at their home on Thompson Lake in Maine.

Patrick Spangler

Patrick has been teaching high school physics for 27 years. In his 17 years at Ramsey High School, he has taught AP Physics I, AP Physics II, AP Physics B, Honors Physics and CPE Physics. Patrick came into teaching via alternate route after first working in industry.

Upon retirement from the NJEA, he will continue his physics-teaching career at Seton Hall Prep. When he's not at school, Patrick and his wife, who are hoping soon to become empty-nesters, plan to spend time at home in West Milford with their younger daughter.

Legislation of the Month

Pass the Trash

NJSBA has updated policies 4111 Recruitment, Selection and Hiring (certified staff members) and 4211 Recruitment, Selection, and Hiring (noncertified staff members). These policies were both updated to reflect new requirements that resulted from P.L. 2018, c.5, known as the “Pass the Trash” law supplementing Title 18A Chapter 6 creating N.J.S.A. 8A:6-7.6 through N.J.S.A. 18A:6-7.13.

The new law requires the district to conduct employment history checks on applicants who are applying for positions in the district that involve regular contact with students. Information must be requested from the applicant and verified with current or former employers of the applicant regarding:

Child abuse or sexual misconduct investigations involving the applicant;

If the applicant was disciplined, discharged or separated from employment for child abuse or sexual misconduct; and/or

If the applicant had a license, professional license, or certificate suspended, surrendered, or revoked while allegations of child abuse or sexual misconduct were pending or under investigation, or due to an adjudication or finding of child abuse or sexual misconduct.

The applicant must provide written authorization that consents to and authorizes disclosure of the information and records, and that releases those employers from liability that may arise from the disclosure or release of records. This does not apply if, after investigation, the allegations are found to be false or the alleged incident of child abuse or sexual misconduct has not been substantiated.

The law also prohibits districts and charter schools from entering into nondisclosure agreements when staff members separate from employment.
