Participating in field campaigns and observational research can be a pivotal career moment for students as it present unique learning and networking opportunities. It also presents challenges to those supporting the students in the field while leading research efforts in this unique environment.
This gathering of experts in atmospheric science observational research, educators and education researchers will explore past experiences of supporting students in the field and develop steps to evidence-based practices for field campaign training and learning.
Workshop Premise: This project seeks to expand the reach of the atmospheric science education research community beyond the traditional classroom setting and to increase awareness of opportunities to optimize student learning within field campaigns. We aim to identify paths for integrating education research about student learning into atmospheric science field campaigns in a way that will support the science goals of the campaign, and lead to evidence-based integration of early-career training in field campaigns, strengthening broader impacts of campaign proposals and projects.
This workshop is a first step in developing evidence-based practices for use with field experiences. Specifically, this workshop will advance our knowledge and understanding of how students learn atmospheric science in field settings. By the end of the workshop, our goal is to develop a statement paper for the community that highlights the learning gaps within the current field campaign model and identifies opportunities for embedding education research in atmospheric science field campaigns.
Participants: We are seeking atmospheric science educators, atmospheric science education researchers, faculty, research scientists, and people working across all field campaign platforms (aircraft, ground, mobile observationalists).
