Māori Movement

Māori Movement is a unique health and wellbeing programme that brings together the traditional training of the Māori warriors (both male and female) into a modern interpretation. This fitness and movement system is based around the knowledge of Atua (Māori Gods) to inspire the approach to each movement sequence.

TĀNE MAHUTA is the Māori God of the forest and birds. The Māori Movement is manu waewae (bird leg movements), focusing on isometric and balance (holding a static exercise position for a period of time).

HAUMIA TIKETIKE is the Māori God of the fern root (aruhe) provider of energy food source. The Māori Movement we focus on is the Manu Waewae (birds leg and feet movement)

RONGOMATĀNE is the Māori God of Cultivation and Peace. The Māori Movement we focus on throughout this Atua (god) is the Wakatō Kūmara (endurance movement). Whakatō Kūmara is the action of planting kūmara or sweet potato.

RŪAUMOKO is the Māori God of Earthquakes and Volcanic Activity. The focus of the Māori Movement is Mokomoko (ground strength). Mokomoko is a lizard.

TANGAROA is the Māori God of the Sea and all things that live within it. The Māori Movement is Ika Rere the Flying Fish of the ocean, focusing on Strength and Mobility – Building resistance without strain and allowing joints to flow.

TĀWHIRIMATEA is the Māori God of Winds and Storm. The Māori Movement is Hau Awhiowhio (Whirl Wind), focusing on High Intensity Interval Training (a form for short sharp bursts to increase your cardio vascular)

TŪMATAUENGA is the Māori God of War. The Māori Movement is Manu waewae (focusing on isometrics and balance).
