ALERT: On February 1, 2025, the Secretary of Homeland Security, Kristi Noem, decided to terminate the Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for Venezuela under the 2023 designation.
DATES: The designation of Venezuela for TPS under 2023 will end at 11:59 p.m. local time on April 7, 2025.
What is TPS? TPS is a type of permission granted by the U.S. government to people from certain countries, allowing them to stay in the U.S. without fear of deportation because it is unsafe to return to their home country.
What happened with Venezuela? Venezuela was included in TPS in 2021 because the situation there was dangerous (crisis, violence, etc.). The U.S. government said, "Venezuelans, you can stay here for a while because it’s not safe to return to your country."
What happened now? In 2023, Venezuela received a new TPS designation for a longer period, but in February 2025, the new Secretary of Homeland Security, Kristi Noem, said it is no longer necessary to continue granting TPS to Venezuelans under the 2023 designation.
When does the TPS of 2023 for Venezuela end? On April 7, 2025. After this date, Venezuelans under the 2023 designation will no longer be able to stay in the U.S. under TPS.
What happens with Venezuelans under the TPS of 2021? That doesn't change. The 2021 designation remains active until September 10, 2025. Therefore, those under that designation can still stay until that date.
In summary:
Venezuelans in the U.S. under the TPS of 2023 should prepare to leave it after April 7, 2025.
Those under the TPS of 2021 are not affected and can stay until September 2025.
