By the 1960s, so many children lived in Squantum that the school was once again overcrowded. Temporary classrooms were added to the side of the school, and sixth grade classes were held in the basement of the Start of the Sea Church.

In 1970-71, a new wing was built. Modern for its time, it featured open classrooms and a huge, media center where children could read, work together, and watch film strips. With few walls, 4th, 5th and 6th grade students could see and hear what other classes were learning.
