World War 2 brought shortages, and families rationed. Students brought nickels and dimes to school to buy War Bonds. After the war, the GI Bill made it possible for veterans to afford mortgages and buy homes in which to raise families. Developers bought Squantum land, divided it, and put up houses, many in the “Cape Cod” style.
Squantum School had so many children that at one point 40 first graders had no classroom, desks or chairs. Residents again banded together and persuaded Quincy to enlarge the School. By 1949, two new wings were added, at a cost of about $270,000. New classrooms were modern, with high ceilings, moveable furniture and lots of natural light. A new auditorium/gymnasium was built as well.
