During these years, the United States experienced The Great Depression. Many adults lost their jobs and their savings. Squantum families grew vegetables, fished, and gathered fruit from orchards. Residents didn’t need to take “the Long Road” off the peninsula to shop, as Squantum had its own meat and fish markets, restaurants, and grocery stores. George Summerville was Squantum School’s principal from 1931 to 1951.
