Spring 2020 Classes

  • Registration for Spring 2020 will open January 2nd. Schedule will be posted here at the beginning of December.
  • Classes run from Feb 5-May 8.
  • Boats are provided for all introductory level classes. Boat ownership mandatory for Opti Race Team.
  • Coaching staff is (at a minimum) US Sailing Level 1, CPR/First Aid and Heads Up Concussion Certified
  • All sailors must wear a US Coast Guard approved life-jacket
  • Safety boat is present for all sessions
  • Cancellation Policy: $100 service charge for cancellation two weeks prior to first date of class.
  • PYSF Scholarships are available to help PYSF achieve its mission to be a community sailing group that teaches sailing regardless of ability to pay. To apply for a scholarship, complete the PYSF Request for Scholarship. Contact treasurer@pysf.us if you have any questions.

Learn-to-Sail

Learn the basics of sailing while developing skills to prepare for sailing with others at PYSF and in the Bay Area. Although no experience is necessary, sailors must be comfortable in the water while wearing a life jacket. Boats provided. Answers to FAQ can be found here. Ages 8-11. (12 students max per class) Cost: $

*Some kids pick up the sport quickly, while others may repeat learn-to-sail multiple times before advancing. Your instructors will update you on the sailor's progress towards the end of the course. This class does not compete in regattas.*

Opti Intro-to-Race

For sailors with less than a year sailing in Cubes, Optimists (or equivalent), who understand the basics of sailing and want an intro to racing skills. Boats provided. Answers to FAQ can be found here. Ages 8-11. Cost: $

Opti Race Team: Green Fleet

Opti Race Team: Champ Fleet

For sailors who have graduated out of Green Fleet (or equivalent) and seek to refine racing skills in a single handed boat. Boat ownership is mandatory. Charters available. Answers to FAQ can be found here. Ages 8-13. Cost: $, or $ when also enrolled in High School Race Team/FJ Intro/420 Intermediate. Race Team members expected to participate in local, Bay Area regattas which are included in the class fee. The regattas outside of the Bay Area are an additional cost of $100/sailor/day.

FJ Intro

For sailors who have outgrown the Optimist and want to learn how to race a double handed boat in preparation for High School racing at an introductory pace. This class also serves those new to the sport and looking to learn the basics. Boats provided. Ages 12+. This class precedes High School Race Team (for those not yet in 8th grade) and 420 Intermediate. Cost: $

420 Intermediate

Sailors who have completed FJ Intro, 420/Laser Summer Course, or equivalent. Looking to perfect trapeze work, spinnaker handling, skippering and crewing. No partner needed. Boats provided. 420 Race Team

Sailors must be invited to join the 420 Race Team. Participation in practice, regattas and on-land assignments is mandatory. Answers to FAQ can be found here. Cost: $1100, or $ when also enrolled in High School Race Team. (Private Boat Owners: $ or $). Race Team members expected to participate in local, Bay Area regattas which are included in the class fee. The regattas outside of the Bay Area are an additional cost of $100/sailor/day.

High School Race Team

8th-12th graders. No experience needed. No pre-existing team needed. Attendance at every practice is preferred, but not mandatory. Regattas happen within the Bay Area, as well as throughout CA. Must be comfortable in the water. Boats provided. Answers to FAQ can be found here. Cost: $

*Regatta participation is based on ability level and team size. Those schools of 4 sailors or more are eligible for every regatta listed. Those smaller teams, and/or those less experienced are suited for the local 1-Day regattas. Sailors that enroll as 8th graders are assigned by the Director to the school they plan on attending for the following year. Pairings for regattas are done by the coaching staff and coordinated through the Parent Reps for each school.
