It is highly recommended that all students start with a minimum of 11 or 12 units. This provides students with the flexibility to drop a subject later in Year 12, if necessary. Any student wishing to start the Year 12 program with the minimum of ten units is required to discuss this with the Director of Studies.
Students who pick up an additional Extension course must start Term 4 with at least 11 units. It is important to ensure that students can cope with the demands of Extension courses before they drop a subject they are currently studying.
Students who have completed the relevant Year 11 Preliminary courses might consider choosing from the following 1 Unit Extension courses:
· History Extension (for students who are studying either Ancient or Modern History or both)
· Music Extension (for students who are studying Music 2)
· Chinese Extension
· French Extension
· German Extension
· Japanese Extension
· Latin Extension
· Extension 2 English (students must be studying English Extension 1 in Year 11 and Year 12)
· Extension 2 Mathematics (students must be studying Mathematics Extension 1 in Year 11 and Year 12)
· Science Extension (students must be studying at least one other Science course. Students can study a maximum of seven units of Science courses for the HSC).
Investigating Science
Students who have studied at least one of the Year 11 Science courses (Biology, Chemistry, Earth and Environmental Science, Physics) are eligible to study 2 Unit Investigating Science in Year 12.
Students can choose to drop one of the Science courses they are currently studying and instead study Investigating Science, or they can add the course to their program. Students can study a maximum of seven units of Science courses for the HSC.
This course is on an equal standing with the other 2 Unit Science course and is very different from the old Senior Science course. It was examined for the first time in NSW last year and a Pymble student was awarded 2nd in the State in the 2019 HSC. Please watch the video to find out more about this subject.
Extension Science
