Remote Learning

Welcome to the 2020-2021 school year!

Our team of remote learning teachers are looking forward to working with you and your family as we navigate the uncertainty surrounding COVID-19 and school reentry. The grade level navigation tabs will lead you directly to information specific to your child's program including contact information for each of our teachers. We are always happy to hear from you. Teachers are accessible by phone, email, text or online meets to support your family in navigating our remote program and accessing instructional support.

Transition to Remote

The next transition point into remote learning will be March 15. The deadline to contact your current school to request a transition for T3 is Monday, February 22.

What is Remote Learning?

The Peace Wapiti Public School Division’s Remote Learning program takes a collaborative approach to working with students and their families to support learning outside the traditional classroom setting. Our programs follow the Alberta Program of Studies and are led by Alberta-certified teachers. Through ongoing learning activities, regular communication, timely feedback and assessment, we ensure students and families have the resources they need to be successful and a clear understanding of their progress toward meeting grade-level learning outcomes.

Please note that a request for Remote Learning indicates that you:

  • have read the frequently asked questions located on the Remote Learning website as well as the Parent Roles and Responsibilities;

  • can commit the appropriate time and resources towards supporting your child’s learning in a home education setting.

Frequently Asked Questions

Grades 1-9 Remote Learning

Is there a registration fee for remote learning?

There are no fees specific to remote learning. Please contact your school with regard to school fees that might be applicable when your child returns to school.

Is technology required to complete the remote learning program?

Families will require appropriate technology to successfully complete the remote learning program. Families will need to provide access to reliable Wi-Fi, a fully charged electronic device with a functioning web camera and microphone, as well as the ability to scan.

How much time will my child need to spend completing schoolwork while in remote learning?

The remote learning program follows the same Alberta curriculum as students follow in the classroom. There are many factors that must be considered when creating a schedule for remote learning. One factor that teachers consider is the child’s grade level as well as the family's schedule. Your remote learning teacher will make recommendations and help adapt schedules based on your unique circumstances.

Is there a schedule?

Yes, schedules are very important! However, they can look very different depending on the child and grade level. Remote teachers will provide an outline for recommended pacing and can provide assistance with creating a daily schedule. If expected due dates are not met, students will be at risk of failing to meet their grade level course outcomes.

Do students need to attend class at certain times?

Students can work through materials at their own pace. Remote teaching staff will recommend a schedule that will allow for pacing that aligns with a typical school schedule. Failure to align with the schedule and attend Google Meets could put students at risk for failure to complete their grade level outcomes.

Do teachers provide due dates for assignments?

Assignment due dates may look a little different depending on your child’s grade level. Students will have access to their work and will have a great deal of flexibility over the time, place and pace of their learning throughout the week. They also need to have a clear sense of what they need to do for the week in order to tackle those tasks. Teachers provide due dates to help students keep on a schedule that will allow them to finish the course on time. Due dates will align with the recommended pacing on the course.

Why is my child only being offered language arts and math to begin?

We want every child to be as successful as possible navigating our remote program. Juggling multiple courses to begin can be quite overwhelming. As we spend a great deal of our instructional time with language arts and math in the classroom, these are the two subjects we generally recommend starting with.

What if my circumstances change or I do not feel that remote learning is working for my child?

Please contact your child’s school to discuss possible options.

Will my child be ready to return to class? What if they are behind?

Your remote learning teacher will be able to communicate your child’s progress based on curriculum outcomes and a typical classroom schedule. Your child’s classroom teacher will be ready to welcome your child back and support them in their learning, wherever they currently are.

What are the reentry dates?

Please view our reentry plan. To explore additional opportunities, please speak directly to your child’s school. http://www.pwsd76.ab.ca/Documents/PWPSD-Teaching-and-Learning-2020-21.pdf

Does my child have access to the additional supports (speech, counselling, etc.) they had while at school?

Please contact your child’s school to discuss possible support available.

How will my child submit or hand in work to their teacher?

There are many ways that children can submit work to their teacher for regular feedback. Please follow the directions given by your remote teacher.

Will my child receive “live” instruction from the teacher?

We strive to provide as much flexibility as possible for families to create a schedule that works for them. The majority of our virtual class meets are optional although we do encourage students to participate whenever possible and if they are struggling with a concept. For our younger students, there can be a range of comfort levels for those supporting the child’s development of foundational skills and attending virtual instructional sessions are highly recommended.

What are the expectations for my child as a remote learner?

It is expected that children are engaging in their school work on a regular basis. Students, especially those in the older grades, should be logging into our remote learning platforms regularly and be in regular communication with their teachers.

What is my role in the remote learning program?

A parent, guardian or designate should:

  • Supervise and monitor daily learning

  • Communicate regularly with the teacher (via email or telephone or Google meets)

  • Access learning activities and resources on a regular basis and stay updated on scheduled events and important dates

  • Ensure that student work samples are submitted on a regular basis for assessment and feedback from your teacher

  • Provide an appropriate learning environment

Where do I pick-up materials?

Materials should be picked up at your child's school.

Do you provide technology?

Technology is not provided through the remote program. Please contact your child’s school to inquire about access to a device.

When are remote teachers available?

Teachers are available from 8:30-3:00 during regular instructional days.
