Owen Lovejoy House Tour
Where Freedom Found Shelter
Where Freedom Found Shelter
Step inside the historic Owen Lovejoy House, built in 1836 and once home to abolitionist minister and congressman Owen Lovejoy. A vital station on the Underground Railroad and now a National Historic Landmark, the restored homestead invites visitors to explore period-furnished rooms, peer into the hidden space above the staircase where freedom seekers found refuge, and discover how Lovejoy’s courage and political leadership helped shape Illinois and the nation. The site also includes the 1848 Colton One-Room Schoolhouse.
