Any student who is a member of the music program may join one or more of the jazz bands offered. Typically, there are four; the Combo and Red Raider Jazz Band are audition-only ensembles, while Jazz 2 and Jazz 3 are open to all interested students. Jazz 2 and Jazz 3 are typically for students new to jazz, or more experienced musicians that are learning new instruments. Students in these bands will perform 2-3 times per year, first at the annual Chilirific Music Palooza, then at District Solo and Ensemble, and possibly at the 18 Karat Spring Concert. Students in Red Raider and Combo will have more opportunities, as they will perform at all of these events, as well as possibly at State Solo and Ensemble and any Jazz festivals that they sign up for as a group. Students in all groups focus on learning to play in jazz styles and have the option to learn to improvise. If auditioning for Red Raider Jazz Band, we accept 4-5 trumpets, 4 trombones, 5 saxes (alto, alto, tenor, tenor, baritone), 1 piano, 1 bass, 1 guitar, 1 drummer, and 1 auxiliary percussion. Choir students occasionally have the unique opportunity to perform as a featured vocalist. Those interested should contact Mr. Guerrero at their convenience. This year, Combo Band will be looking for 1 bassist and up to 3 horn players (a combination of any saxes/trumpet/trombone. Doubling is allowed, but we would prefer auditions on one of those instruments.)
