To serve as an ESS Tutor, you must apply and be approved. This process is mostly automated.
A Service Record should be filled out digitally, printed, signed, and submitted to the School ESS Coordinator.
When applicants are approved to be ESS tutors, their names will automatically appear in this list.
School leaders can click the button below to see how many tutoring hours their school has accrued.
ESS Programs: When people refer to ESS, they are often speaking of ESS programs, such as before- or after-school tutoring, Saturday school, summer school, and some during-the-school-day interventions.
ESS Grant: But ESS is also a state grant that helps us pay for these services. Its purpose is to provide academic support to students who are struggling academically.
All public schools must offer some type of Extended School Services (ESS) outside of the normal school day.
KDE requires that we track and report (in Infinite Campus) which students received interventions through ESS, as well as details about the interventions that were delivered.
Typically, tutors are core content teachers who have students in need of additional support. But with a principal’s approval, certified teachers, classified staff, or substitutes can be an ESS tutor. Tutors aren’t someone just looking for work hours. There must be an academic need.

Find a convenient time for you and your students, outside normal school hours. In-person, virtual, and blended settings are all acceptable.
No, unless you have special permission from your principal. Work with your students (and other teachers’ students) to schedule multiple attendees each tutoring session. The ESS funds are limited, so we try to make the most of the funds provided to us.
No, unless you have special permission from your principal. Only schedule sessions if multiple students plan to attend. Again, we’re trying to make the most of the funds available to us.
Everyone must turn in the ESS Service Record to their School ESS Coordinator. The only people who need to clock in for ESS are classified staff. Those who should no longer clock in for ESS include certified teachers, certified subs, and classified subs.
Check with your ESS Coordinator for due dates. Print, sign, and submit the forms to your school ESS coordinator.
An ESS Daytime Waiver is required if a school wants to use ESS grant funds to pay for interventions during the school day. Principals sometimes choose to use these funds to pay for an AmeriCorps member, part-time classified staff member, or substitute to assist with interventions during the school day. If a school is granted the waiver, it still must provide ESS services outside of the normal school day. And they have to complete a Daytime ESS Evaluation Form at the end of the school year.
Approved: No schools are currently approved for ESS Daytime Waiver
