David Van Ness (he/him) is a graphic design consultant and book compositor. In Cambridge, Massachusetts, he taught typesetting at the first do-it-yourself typesetting bureau in the United States; Harvard Extension sent its graphic design students to his classes to learn type. In San Francisco, he helped bring desktop publishing to maturity as a viable tool for excellent typography. In his spare time, he builds and repairs harpsichords and is president of the board of MusicSources.
